Sage Romasa liked to establish the Shivalingas on the banks of the Tambiraparani. So, he sought to his guru Agasthya about this, he advised to throw flowers that are used for Shiva puja into the river and do the installations where the flowers reached the shores. Based on his advice , Sage Ramosa thrown lotus flower into the river , nine of this flower reached the bank and Papanasam was the first. Sun being the first in the planets, Papanasam is known as Surya kailash.
God Indira had Dwashta, as his guru. God Indira got the news that Dwashta was performing a Yagna for the demons , so he killed him and got the sin called Brahmmahati dosha. In order to get relief from the Dosha, God Indira worshiped Lord Shiva. Sri Guru advised him to go this place and worship Lord Shiva. When God Indira entered the borders of this place , he got relieved from his sin. Hence this place is known as Papanasam (Papa - Sin, Nasam - Destruction) meaning destroying sins.
There is a pounding stone in front of the shrine of Mother Sri Ulgammai. Women use to take turmeric and make the turmeric water for abishek to the Mother. They consume a little of this abishek water hoping they will get married soon and blessed with a child. Married women believe that this abishek water consumption would also increase the longevity of their Mangal Sutras.
During the wedding of the Lord Shiva with Mother Paravathy, there was uncontrollable crowd of the sages , devas in Mount kailash , due to this Earth lost its balance. Lord Shiva commanded Sage Agasthya to go to Pothigai Hills in the south to balance the Earth level. On the first day of Chithirai month , Lord Shiva and Goddess Paravathy granted the Wedding Darshan to Sage Agasthya. Lord Papanasanatha graces the Wedding Darshan behind the sanctum sanctorum as Kalyanasundarar on His vehicle bull. Sage Agasthya and his wife Lopamudra are in the shrine worshipping the Lord.
This Papanasar temple is first among the Nava Kailayams where the Navagraha known for this temple is Surya (The Sun). Papanasar is mainly known for his healing powers where he seems to be the medicine for any diseases in the world. He has the power to cure any diseases for his disciples who really have the love and affection on him.
The temple is famous for its Chittirai Peruvila where the Urchavam used to happen for 13 days. This is in memory of Saint Agasthiyar where he got the Kalyana Dharshan of Lord Shiva and Parvathy in RishabaVahana along with his wife Ulobamuthirai.
The body of Lord Papanasar is wholly and naturally made of Rudraksha who is also known as Rudrakshanathar. The old name of Papanasar is VairajaLingam.
