Mahavir Jayanti
The main festival of the Jain community, Mahavir Jayanti, falls on 2 April this year. It marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira and is also known as 'Mahavir Janma Kalyanak.'
Lord Mahavira was the twenty fourth and the last Tirthankara; and his birth anniversary is a religious holiday for Jains.
He was the propagator of Jainism and developed a five-fold path for all households to follow – 'Ahimsa', 'Asteya', 'Brahmacharya', 'Satya' and 'Aparigraha'. Jains follow these vows to live in peace and harmony.
The celebration of this auspicious festival is very simple. Abhisheka (ceremonial bath) is given to the local statues of Lord Mahavira. Many charitable acts and donations to save wildlife are made during the day. Devotees visit temples to meditate and offer prayers where lectures are held to preach the path of virtue as defined by Jainism.
