* * *

In Ramayana, Sita who is Mahalakshmi herself is said to be the reason why Sri Rama did not do 'vadam' of Kakasura who assaulted Sita. When Sri Rama throws the blade of grass at Kakasura, it chases him as he flies through all the 3 worlds looking for a way out. Finally knowing there is no way out, he surrenders at the feet of Sri Rama, when benevolent Sita piratti makes Kakasura's head bow down at the feet of Sri Rama. Immediately Sri Rama pardons Kakasura.

Also later, on Sita piratti's imprisonment, Sri Rama is enraged at the entire Rakshasa race. But it is said, Sita piratti takes so much karunyam at her captors (and tormentors) that she feels for them, especially those rakshasa women who tortured her by their words in the ashoka vana.

So the above reasons are frequently cited to show how benevolent mother Mahalakshmi is towards our mistakes, and how she, like mentioned in the OP, speaks for our sake to the great Lord Sriman Narayana.

Jai Mata Mahalakshmi Ki!

Where is the reference to this in Ramayana?

I think it is in Padma Purana that this benevolent action of Piraatti is described. The kakasura falling down before Rama and sita making his head touch Rama's feet is vividly described in Padma Purana and not in Valmiki Ramayana.

Or is my memory failing me? I have to perhaps checkup with the originals.

Vaagmi ji,

Actually I heard this incident for the first time from Velukkudi Krishnan and then heard it several times from others... I think they all said it is from 'Ramayana' but I am not sure about this as I have only read C.Rajagopalachari's abridged Ramayana. So sorry on that part, I am unable to point you to the right direction! :) (Would be glad to hear from you where this incident is actually stated).
