People still worshiped the old gods like Ayyanar or Mariamman, etc.,
but ancestor worship became increasingly important from early part of 18th
Century. Religious traditions had an enormous influence on the development
of the most basic and lasting principles of Family Deity. Rituals to honour
ancestors are extremely important and must be performed in a precise way,
known as Karma. By carrying them out properly, an individual can receive the blessings
of the deceased relatives. Of late, significant changes have taken place
to worship the family Deity, particularly before the Wedding celebration
or any good deeds in the family. As ancestor worship is a religious practice
based on the belief that deceased family members have a continued existence,
it is also essential to worship the family deity and visit the temple once in a
year without fail. Prayers and offering Flowers, sometimes in the form of a garland
or Neivedhyam, even if one kneels down in front of the before the Divine picture
at home is just not sufficient. The images found in the temples will have
more divine power than the one possessed or held at home. Some shrines
have symbolic objects of a particular Deity and the prayer materialises on
one's visit irrespective of the distance or not connected by road, etc. for e.g.
at a different location not within the vicinity of the residential colony or area.
Some temples are not open on all the days. In some temples, elaborate meals
will be served in front of the temple or at a specified place immediately after
the puja is over. Some say that the pujas performed at home do not need
a priest and the contact between Devotee and Deity is direct and there is no
interruption.
