TCS Firing Big Time. Upto 30,000 Employees May Face Axe

Source: Reddit India

Information coming in from TCS (and this letter) indicates that mid-level managers and consultants are being targeted for mass layoffs, which was never seen in TCS in recent history. AST or Assistant Consultants with Band D, who have shown little or no improvement in the last 2 years, along with ASOC (Project Managers) who are band C and above, and other middle to higher level managers are those which are in the firing line.

A,B,C,D and E are internal rating system used by TCS, with A being the best and E worst.

Employees and tech observers are actually surprised with such mass layoffs, considering that TCS is known for ‘job security’. The case become more curious considering that TCS has plans of hiring 35,000+ freshers for 2014-15 session.

A TCS spokesperson recently said: “We continue to be leading recruiters of IT talent across the world, not only in India. In this fiscal year, we have a total hiring target of 55,000 professionals and we are on track to meet it.”
Some employees, on condition of anonymity, revealed that TCS plans to fire mid-level managers who are drawing fat packages and underperforming, and replace them with low-cost freshers and train them. Although this is a common practice in more of the IT services companies, firing 25,000-30,000 employees is certainly not normal.

Infact working conditions at TCS are so good that it experiences lowest attrition rates compared to other IT companies, and maybe this can be the reason that ‘old horses’ are being removed in order to shuffle the talent cards.

Another source informed us that broadly speaking, all those employees with more than 8 years of experience (with $70-100 / hour billing rates) and with no assigned projects are immediately fired. Infact, if we believe this source, then there is no issue of projects with TCS; but with costs-cutting as they have decided to get away with ‘excess fat’ and hire freshers on a mass scale to ‘keep the balance’.

Scary situation indeed.
Why TCS Firing Is Bad Compared to Yahoo Layoff

In the month of October, Yahoo India fired around 500 employees from their Software Development Center (SDC) in Bangalore. Startups, which are in dire need of talented engineers quickly absorbed this shock, as most of the engineers were hired by them.

However, the case with TCS layoffs is different. Most of those who have been given pink slips are highly paid consultants and managers who have quit programming and chosen managerial positions. Yahoo engineers were programmers and developers, and even with a slight compromise on their annual take-home, they can be hired by start-ups.

But managers and consultants are specialties of MNCs, and a start-ups generally don’t require them.
Employees With Pink Slips Have Tough Road ahead

Most of the TCS employees who are in the line of fire are drawing packages upwards 20 Lakh per annum. They are the ones with 8-12 years experience and have got into a comfort zone.

These professionals are married, with kids – They have a family and mortgages to take care of. With so many people getting fired, the supply for such people is going to far outstrip (if there is) the demand.

They will now have to probably take up jobs with half their salary packages or even worst not get a job at all!

Is IT Landscape in India Changing?

Globally, TCS is one of the top 10 IT Services companies, which has crossed Rs 5 lakh crore market capital this June. It is already India’s most valued private company and world’s second most valued IT services company after IBM with 3 lakh+ employees under their payroll (3,13,757 as of September 30, 2014)

Earlier this year, IBM had unceremoniously fired several of their employees, which had been termed as a bloodbath and cruel.

When world’s biggest IT companies are not shying away from firing employees as per their convenience, this throws a very vital question to the whole industry: How much dynamic and flexible this industry is, and how much ‘job security’ can it provide? Why doesn’t training and motivation assist their under-performing employees, and why can’t these companies provide a cushion for their employees against fluctuations in business and profits?

Not sure about the veracity of this..This comes to 10% of the total work force which is a big number..As per my sources it is about 7000 employees which is only 2% who are under performing and likely to get the pink slip

once the news of TCS firing mid level and seniors on large scale leaked out, the first set to get marching orders convened a meeting with labour unions to organise

themselves .

TCS put out the news that they are not contemplating big size lay offs. only the normal attrition is contemplated. the truth will not be known.

nasscom and other agencies related to IT should take up on employees behalf and resolve the issue faced by experienced professionals.

Govt has proved totally useless in protecting the interests of IT workers.

in 2008 many IT pros found themselves on the streets . they were some heart rending stories of layoffs.

If a free hand is given to private companies , employees get exploited.

India is the worst place for work for IT people .

they should get out of india as fast as possible if they want good money and decent life style.

india can give only low class application programming and low payments

Madras high court stays termination of TCS employee

Madras high court stays termination of TCS employee

CHENNAI: In a case which may open a floodgate of litigation, the Madras high court on Tuesday restrained software major TCS from retrenching an employee who has been issued termination by the company.

Amid reports that TCS planned to retrench 25,000 engineers, Rekha, who is pregnant at present, was issued termination orders on December 22, 2014. She was informed that she would be relieved from duty on January 21, 2015.

She moved the high court saying the retrenchment move was illegal and in gross violation of Industrial Disputes Act, 1947.

On Tuesday, admitting her petition, Justice M Duraiswamy granted a four-week interim inunction restraining the company from retrenching her.

In her petition, Rekha said she joined TCS in Chennai in March 2011 as an IT analyst.

She is a 'workman' within the meaning of Section 2(s) of the Industrial Disputes Act, 1947, as her main duties and responsibilities are technical and clerical in nature.

Her job involves receiving and collating information about software/application to be developed, analyzing requirements and designing and developing appropriate software or application based on client company's needs. Noting that she was honest, sincere and dedicated worker and that her performance had always been very good, Rekha said she had been given the rating 'C' (meets expectations) thrice during her service in TCS.

She said the company reportedly had taken an unfair decision to terminate the services of 25,000 workers holding designation of assistant consultant and above, and to recruit 55,000 persons, predominately freshers on the basis of campus interviews, and other less experienced persons with to cut costs.

She was issued termination orders on December 22, 2014, stating that she would be relieved from service on January 21, 2015.

According to Section 25 of the Industrial Disputes Act, the principle is last come, first go. TCS has not published any seniority list as required under the rules framed under the Act and it has not given any notice of retrenchment as required under the Act.

TCS does not propose to pay 15 days of wages for every completed year of service as compensation which too is mandatory under the Act, she said, adding, "in any event, termination is not valid or justifiable."

TCS has put the rumors to rest! Good for TCS!

[h=1]TCS breaks silence on layoffs issue[/h]
[h=2]"We would like to place on record that TCS has not initiated, and is not planning to initiate, any large scale exits of any section of its staff in any part of the organisation," the IT company said.[/h]
IT bellwether Tata Consultancy Services finally broke its silence on the alleged large scale layoffs by the firm and clarified that these are entirely false and baseless claims.

The IT firm went on twitter on Tuesday and said, “We would like to place on record that TCS has not initiated, and is not planning to initiate, any large scale exits of any section of its staff in any part of the organisation.”

For the past few weeks, social media was abuzz with news that TCS is likely to layoff 25,000 employees who are “under performers.”
The news went viral and dragged the attention of various trade unions in Tamil Nadu such as Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) and All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), New Democratic Labour Front (NDLF) who sprang into action and came out in support of TCS employees. A small group called Forum for IT employees also voiced their concerns on this issue.

TCS also said that performance appraisals and associated processes are an integral part of the company's operations. TCS spokesperson said that the involuntary attrition for the first nine months of this year has been 2,574 employees which represent 0.8 per cent of the total employee strength.

The statistics for financial year 2014 and 2013 were 2,203 and 2,132 respectively. “The total involuntary attrition for the current fiscal year will be around one per cent,” TCS spokesperson said.
