Indian prime minister Narendra Modi pulled off a calibrated masterstroke when US president Barack Obama accepted his invitation to attend the Republic Day parade as the guest of honour.

First, Modi broke the unexpected news on Twitter. In response to this was the White House’s affirmative tweet that the US president was preparing for the ceremony on Jan. 26 in New Delhi. Since 1950, the country has hosted heads of state of other countries as chief guests for its Republic Day, a holiday that commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution.

It is, no doubt, a deft political move by the new prime minister, precisely because conventional wisdom suggested Modi would keep the US at arm’s length. However, as Milan Vaishnav, the South Asia associate of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, told Quartz, “No single visit can cement US-India ties; the hard work is always in the follow-up. And there, we see plenty of lingering issues between the two democracies from trade to climate change to intellectual property.”
As explained in this Brookings report, building Indo-US relations would require both time and dexterity. Take for instance the fact that the US denied Modi a US visa for a decade, over his alleged involvement in the 2002 Gujarat riots. Then, the arrest of India’s deputy counsel general, Devyani Khobragade, in New York last year, opened a can of worms of estranged diplomacy between the two countries.

“Obama’s acceptance indicates he intends to redouble his efforts on the pivot—and he is likely to find a much more willing partner on the other end. Given India’s economic struggles and the imperative for foreign investment and technology transfer, closer ties with the US are essential,” said Vaishnav. “But where this visit can play an important role is sending a signal to the respective bureaucracies that there is a political imperative from the very top to find ways of working together and overcoming past differences.”

What is the astonishing masterstroke in getting a foreign leader to come to India ???. what is the extra-ordinary genius here ?. what is this concocted story about conventional wisdom that we wanted to keep them at arms length & surprised everyone with a brilliant strategy.. None of us knew we wanted to sideline the USA in the first place.. LOLWhat is the deft political move here ? what is strategic in all this ? frankly how does it matter whether Obama has been sidelined & written off or not…??? How does it matter to us in India ?Astonishing psychopants have appeared on the scene from nowhere…and spouting crap all over the news media…with such articles..But politics & the nonsense surrounding it has become all the more interesting…LOL !!

Smart move by Modi ji who understands the importance of global interdependence of countries and knows what is best for all of India

JKji,
Somethings are difficult for some to understand. When Dutch is being taught in a class, or some one is discussing Christian religion, people who do not understand it should refrain from commenting and showing their ignorance. It is easy to walk away, and let others who understand discuss it. This is a free forum and people of similar intellectual level can participate in information exchange.

Dear JK,

Modi is no frog in the well!LOL

You see India has a dangerous neighbour which has some connection with China,..some rumor that Chinese are training Pakistani troops at the Indo Pak border and you have China trying to encroach..recently India launched Mangalyaan and this would not have gone down to well with other Asian countries.

So its a smart move to foster ties with a Super power so that the dangerous neighbors and irs allies will be cautious and think twice before trying some stunts.

Even if Obama has been written off by his county but this act of calling the President of USA as the guest of honor for Republic Day will go down well in history and the next president of USA will also try to foster good ties with India and it might benefit India economically.

So you see JK...how important it is for the frog to get out of the well and increase the defence and economy around its well's to make sure no snake gets in?LOL

Prasadji,Some people do not understand what geniuses mean.. it is like Dutch classes. Many unbelievable geniuses have walked this planet & they have shown the light to the entire mankind. Narasimha Rao strode like a Giant & showed what a genius statesman can do & how far reaching his actions were & we were all fortunate to see the great master in action. Those who do not understand what genius, masterstroke, strategic vs tactical etc.. should not post, comment & show their ignorance. It is easy to walk away & let others who understand to discuss it. Absolutely agree, this is a free forum and people of similar intellectual level can think even a dadhi like rabri devi is a genius… nothing prevents anyone… LOL !!Cheers,

Renuka - While I do not support the current govt on ideology, lets wait & see if they can deliver on their promises on development?. That’s why I have not posted any thread on the current govt performance, too early to judge. I can understand if the new govt ministers or partymen are pshycopants, it is understandable. To be fair, I don’t see much pshycopancy in the govt or the ruling party/alliance, but more by the bystanders in the news media & others who have taken this to new levels.. LOL !!.So I am not being anti-govt, but I am anti-pshycopants who have gone on a world trip… LOL !!

Renuka - I agree, inviting Obama is a very good thing, & we need to foster good nah, great ties with other nations so we can benefit economically. All I am saying is, there is nothing genius or masterstroke in this.. lol. Do you think any foreign leader will say no to come to India when you send a formal invite??? or for that matter to any other country ? lets please not go overboard. but I agree, this is a good move...

Modi went to the US in September or October, there was much hullabaloo and came back like a mouse, accepting Obama's stipulation that drug patents of US giants should be honoured by India. The new drug prices policy came out on the return of Modi and essential medicines are now costing 10 times or more! The anti-rabies vaccine is available for Rs. 25,000/- per injection whereas it used to cost only around Rs. 2000/- to Rs. 3000/= before Obama ordered NaMo to obey him. The prices of Cancer medicines also have shot through the roof, people say. Now that is how Diplomatic coups are pulled off, I think.

After Obama visits in Jan. 2015, India will pass the nuclear liability exemption for US suppliers and we will get half a dozen nuclear power reactors made from junked-for-decades spare parts from the US. There will be no Udayakumar nor any opposition to any of these new reactors, I will bet! Just wait and see.

Uncle Sam is a business man always.

Good as more people will reinvent and migrate to traditional medicines. Native wisdom will flourish. More and more medical shops stock ayurvedic and homeopathy medicines. One I can recommend is kantila miniature golis for sore/irritating throat, relief is magical.
Obama knows what he is doing. He still has half a term. Good expanding relations with India will increase his party's chances in the next election, so say some american pundits.

Modi will make India a soft super power. Modi bashers will suffer more heart burn. If he delivers to the common voter what he promised in his rallies, he will rule for a decade.

I am not a modi fan, but India needs him, and wish him success as it is India's success too.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s NDA government completes 6 months at the Centre, its record on the economic front has been equivocal. Inflation is down, but that is more due to crashing global commodity prices than any big policy steps announced by the Modi government. On the key issue of education, piloted by HRD minister Smriti Irani who appears to be under the influence of RSS ideology, the country has moved backwards. But foreign policy, an area where Modi has personally taken charge, has seen bravura steps which should dramatically improve India’s international standing.

The capstone of these efforts has been Modi’s diplomatic coup in getting President Obama to be the chief guest at the next Republic Day parade. Indian non-alignment had been defined chiefly as holding the West, led by the US, at arm’s length — which explains why the India-US nuclear deal elicited so much political opposition in India (including from BJP) despite its signal achievement of bringing to an end India’s nuclear pariah status. It also explains why, despite India’s long history of inviting foreign heads of state to grace Republic Day parades, a US president has never been invited before.

The signal sent by the R-Day invitation is even more important as Modi was denied a US visa for long. It indicates that the prime minister sets national interest above personal grudges, as a transformed relationship with the US promises much. It provides India access to high technology, capital and an enormous market for its goods and services. The many convergent interests between India and the US include co-operation on terror, which threatens both nations.

Modi began his innings with an unprecedented invitation to Saarc neighbours to attend his government’s inauguration. His first foreign tour was to Bhutan and he subsequently visited Nepal, testimony to his government’s intention to pay close attention to immediate neighbours. He visited Japan and played host to President Xi Jinping, drumming up investment offers of $35 billion and $20 billion respectively. He won the hearts of NRIs in the US and Australia, opening up the possibility of mobilising India’s vast diaspora for its development. And he made India’s case forcefully at multilateral meets such as Brics, East Asia summit, UN General Assembly and G20. If we see this much action and innovation in spheres other than foreign policy as well, India will be a transformed country in no time.

The choice of the Republic Day chief guest has always been a strong indicator of India’s foreign policy preferences. From a marked partiality for the “third world”, recent Indian governments have graduated to using Republic Day to further strategic and economic interests rather than ideological symbolism — witness the invitations to Shinzo Abe, Saudi King Abdullah and Kazakh president Nursultan Nazarbayev in recent years.

But inviting the US president has always been a bridge too far. A second summit with Barack Obama in six months shows only one thing — Narendra Modi believes the US has a big role to play in his plans for India. In this, he is probably playing to a different drummer than both the foreign policy establishment of South Block and the phalanx of the Indian strategic community in the national capital. In fact, MEA clearly stated this was a “personal initiative” by the PM, indicating they had been thinking on very different lines.
...............................................................

It is clear the PM is intent on involving the world to transform India. And therefore it’s time for him to step on the gas for all the things he needs to do in this country to make it easy for the rest of the world. A clear roadmap with clear timelines for reform decisions is very important.

He has a rash of big-ticket economic decisions, laws his government needs to clear. So far, the world has been content to ride on Modi’s own energy and enthusiasm. He is reaching the end of the road on this one. All his overseas visits show Modi is keen on involving the Indian diaspora, who he believes has big stakes in India’s prosperity.

Therefore, it is completely mystifying to watch the pretty HRD minister start an unnecessary war on language. Not only is it totally contrary to how 21st century Indians think, it’s completely at odds with what her own government aims to do. If we are opening to the world, let it be “sarva bhasha samabhava”.Times Of India | Blogs

The media is obfuscating the kV language issue, and some are falling for it. Anybody can get a working knowledge of German i n three months. German introduced surreptitiously in mid term. Done by sibal bypassing official three language formula and laws of the land.

In the run-up to Obama’s visit, a number of senior officials from State Department and Pentagon are expected to be in India for preparation of the bilateral agenda. “We expect President Obama to arrive in India from a third country (though not Pakistan). Normally American Presidents like to club other countries in their schedule for long haul visits,” said a senior MEA official.

President Pranab Mukherjee and Modi are expected to host banquets in the honour of Obama, who is the first American president to be the guest of honour at the R-Day festivities.
