Seers demand law against superstitious practices

Over 150 heads of religious institutions from across the State — backed by rationalist groups, Dalit organisations and intellectuals — launched a three-day fast on Monday, demanding the promulgation of a law against superstitious practices.
Speaking at the launch of the stir, Veerabhadra Chennamalla Swami of Nidumamidi Math in Bagepalli, said it was a “satwik” agitation for a “social justice cause” and not restricted to any religious faith or belief system.

Shivarudra Swami of Beli Math said that superstitious practices that exploited gullible people were only “the outer shell of religion without any core substance”.

Panditaradhya Shivacharya Swami of Sanehalli Math said that “influential” religious institutions should not get immunity from the law because of their proximity to political power.

The other demands of the seers included banning discriminatory practices such as made snana, pankti bheda and the custom in Kadu Golla community of keeping menstruating women and young mothers out of their homes.

Activists of the Karnataka Jnana Vijnana Samiti, Dalit Sangharsha Samiti (Samatavada) and pourakarmika unions gathered at Freedom Park to express their support. Eminent persons who lent their support included K. Marulasiddappa, K.Allama Prabhu Bettadur, C.S. Dwarakanath and N. Prabha.

Animal sacrifice, fire walking, breaking coconut on the head, alagu, kavadi, whipping during march, nailing on the cross, sudarsan homam or any homam for that matter, pujas in chudukadu . . . the list is endless.

What are the superstitious practices in Tamil Nadu?

Are Kavadi and Homams treated as superstitious practices? How are they superstitious?

Animal sacrifice, whipping during march and nailing on the cross are related to important religious festivals.

Interestingly , the domestic workers in delhi from tamilnadu have mariamman festiva land firewalking rituals .

My maid does fire walking every year.for various reasons .

what surprises me is that she does not get hurt . no burns etc on feet .

how does it happen , I wonder .

perhaps they walk fast on burning fuel that contributes to no injury.

Kavadias from Rajasthan and haryana pass via delhi from benaras/hardwar every year on national highways .

they are well received by the locals who set up facilities for overnight stay and feeding them

they are huge traffic hazards as they block the highways for hours.

sometimes there are road accidents involving them

whippingetc during moharram is commonly witnessed.

there were tensions in delhi regarding routes of these processions in some areas

There is a ban on animal sacrifice in Tamil Nadu. Here the Elephants of all the temples enjoy one month vacation!

But there is widespread practice of fire walk, Palmistry, Parrot astrology, Black Magic/Exorcism, etc

Hope the Tamil Nadu Seers after reading news item will grab the opportunity, find some ways and means to exhibit their support also for the good cause.
 
Jaya banned animal sacrifice, but retracted within two years. Beliefs and practice's should be allowed, but quacks and opportunists can be punished. There is no harm in monitoring the practitioners. If gambling is to be banned, then stock exchanges must be closed.
 

Hope the Tamil Nadu Seers after reading news item will grab the opportunity, find some ways and means to exhibit their support also for the good cause.
More than the seers, it is that small circle of people who advise them on socio-political matters need to grab the opportunuty to bring about the changes.
