Thiru Aadi Pooram

Thiru Aadi Pooram
is a very important festival for Iyengars during the month of Aadi. GODDESS ANDAL’S birthday falls on the pooram star in the month of Aadi. The festival on this day THIRU AADI POORAM is celebrated on a grand scale in Srirangam and Srivalliputhur.

Andal at Srivalliputtur

ANDAL is one among 12 Azhwars who are the most famous devotees of Lord Vishnu and authors of Naalayira Divya Prabhandham – “4000 verses in praise of LORD VISHNU”.Head over here for more Gyaan on Azhwars. One day PERIAZHWAR (one of the azhwars) found ANDAL in his nandavanam (garden) near a TULSI (Holy Basil) plant. The day was of Star Pooram (name of star in Indian astrology) in the month of Aadi (according to the Tamil Calendar). So this day is celebrated as ANDAL’S birthday.

Andal wanted to marry Lord RENGANATHAR (Vishnu at SRIRANGAM). She has composed a number of paasurams (devotional songs/poetry) in praise of Lord Renganathar. Her paasurams are THIRUPPAVAI ( 30 Paasurams) and NACHIAR THIRUMOZHI (143 Paasurams).
