7 arrested for stealing from bags at airport

CHENNAI: They stole anything and everything, from undergarments to mobile phones and cameras, from the baggage of departing passengers at the international terminal of Chennai airport. But on Sunday, their luck ran out when an officer manning the surveillance centre caught them in the act, leading to the arrest of seven loaders who stole valuables from the bags before loading them to aircraft.

There have been several complaints from passengers that items like mobile phones were stolen from their checked-in baggage at the airport. The seven workers, who were handling bags of Sri Lankan Airlines, were caught stealing with the help of a surveillance camera. "They were caught when they were trying to steal a set of vests from the bag of a passenger heading for Colombo," a senior airport official said.

"This must have been going on for some time. An officer manning the surveillance centre noticed the workers opening baggage and stealing items," said a CISF official. Their modus operandi was to identify an unlocked bag that comes by conveyor belt from the check-in counter, gather around it when it reaches a point from where it is taken out for loading and steal from it. "Four people stood guard when others stole," a police officer said.

"In the last six months, at least three thefts by contract workers were reported. It is high time the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security looked at the situation as a large number of people are posted in high-security points of the airport without any background checks. These workers are deployed by subcontractors and they get passes on a daily basis," a senior official said. Police had arrested a worker for stealing from the bag of a passenger a week ago.

Passengers often complain about valuables going missing from bags during transit at airports. "The workers were targeting departure passengers because they will not be able to complain. The passengers will find out about the theft only after reaching the destination. If they are transit passengers, they will never know at which airport the theft happened," said a police officer.
