Recently I had to attend a funeral of some distant relative at palghat. The deadman was a senior citizen with not much of means, a surviving wife with no children. the purohit demanded to know 'what is the budget'? for the funeral and post-funeral rites. when told that the deadman has not left anything worthwhile and just the wife wanted a brahmin funeral and rites for 10-days, she was told that the minimum basic cost will be Rs.20000/-. Otherwise the deadman's soul will not go to heaven etc., I request the enlightened members of this forum to discuss this serious issue and give their opinions.

Precisely this is the reason i posted in my thread whether brahmins are commercialising their duties. If this trend continues i feel even those devout brahmin will loose faith in such rituals.

a soul reaches heaven not on the basis of brahmin performing the rituals. it reaches heaven or hell on the basis of the sin or papam the body in which it resed did during its life time.

Many brahmins are slowly prefesring to go to gaya or other places to do the rituals becausse it is more easy to do it there with reasonable expenses.

i dont advocate that once should not pay the brahmin sastry, for they also have to exit, but i am opposedto the exploitation.

we have the story of tenaliraman and the golden mango

This is why, I am also getting angry. Please note that the Shraddha sampradaya started when? many says during vedic period. When was the monetary system introduced? very later period, until then it was only barter system. My view is Shraddha is not sastram, it is only sampradhayam. a way of distribution of wealth. Normally people won't part with their wealth to any. atleast this time ... death.... people will not stick to their wealth and share in the form of dhana, dhakshina, etc. Our vedic culture (i am not a scholar, but heard from many) says we have to 'thrippti paduththavendum'. which can satiate once need. it is only food. so food was main thing in shraddha. but later what happened, these priests thought food is only time being satiate their hunger, but money will never satiate their greed. so all started demanding money. Now-a-days they have very good network from Kanyakumari to Katmandu to exchange their views through cell phone and make uniform dhakshina. You please let me know how our salaries are different from place to place, persons to persons, even with the same qualification one person may get less and another get more. whereas in the case of Priests whether knowledgeable or not, the fees is common to all.
I am just confused whether God asks only money to be spent for praying or doing rituals. Atleast Govt. insists big corporates have to do Corporate Social responsibility, which indirectly they help down trodden. Whereas the Priests suppose to do their veda patanam and veda paatanam, never does this service of social obligation for the poor. when they get caught in this process, they will escape saying i have to go there, here, etc. I am wondering when there will emerge another Ramanujar??????? to change this system.

Answer: Cadaver donation!

Other gentleman had suggested that Purohits also need to exist and survive in today's material world. I do agree but when they make some sort of union and start exploiting the people, especially the poor who want to follow the brahminical rites strictly, then we do need to oppose it and mobilise opinion against this exploitation. Another gentleman querried whether the Vettiyan will do his services free?. In this particular case the Office at the funeral ghat waived off the fees completely and the vettiyan too did free service considering the plight of poor widow; whereas the purohit did not turn up because he wont do the rites below his 'market price'.

Cadaver donation is fast catching up in many of the cities now. There was some opposition that your 'soul' wont go to heaven unless the rites are done properly. But instead of burning the body parts which can save someone else in desperate need of them to keep themselves alive, we can very well consider donating our body to Hospitals/medical research institutions. And there is just no need for any expenses towards funeral rites or prohits.

My request is, can anyone enlighten me about what our sastras or vedas say about cadaver donation? Is it banned for brahmins?

Mr. Sundararaman ji, even though many agree with your and my terms, they may not come out with right answer. Even in this site one gentleman has very clearly mentioned THERE IS NO MENTION ABOUT SHRADDHA IN VEDAS and even i too got the same answer from various scholars. Now-a-days it is only exploitation. I know my exboss, after death of his wife, he donated her to medical colleage. He is also a brahmin. Unfortunately we who seek truth, unable to understand the sanskrit knowledge. and those who have studied well and deep are unable to apprise us the reality. Hope some Ramanujar will emerge shortly.
