இவ்வாறு சொல்லப்படும் ப்ரவரத்தில் வரும் ரிஷிகள் அவரவர் கோத்ர ரிஷிகளே!, அக்னியிடத்து ப்ரார்த்தனை செய்கையில், மூல ரிஷிகளான மந்த்ர த்ருஷ்டாகளது வம்சத்தவர் என்று கூறுவதால் அக்னி மகிழ்வடைவதாக தர்ம சாஸ்த்ரம் சொல்லுகிறது. ஏன் இப்படி கோத்ரங்களை/ப்ரவரங்களைச் சொல்லுகிறோம் என்பதற்கு பல காரணங்கள் இருக்கின்றன. அவற்றில் சில;

எங்கே, யாருக்கு அபிவாதனம் செய்யக்கூடாது என்பதும் ஸ்மிருதியில் சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. அவை;

Abhivadaye (Sanskrit: अभिवादये ābhivādye) is a religious cultural practice among Hindus, and applicable only to men to introduce themselves to others especially the elders. It is practiced widely among the Brahmins and is applicable to Vaishyas and Kshatriyas also.

Why such a holy aura woven around a seemingly innocent looking "introductory verse"? May other incidental questions arise:

1) If one has done abhivadaye to an elder, is it needed the second time? Since he would already know the pravaram, gothram etc.
2) Prati-abhivadanam - what is that? Most of the present populace can be safely excluded if it includes some sort of sanskrit counter introduction. I have not seen anyone do such a thing.
3) If this is only an introduction why cannot one do it to everyone?

Sairam. In the article it has been said that Rishi means "
Other community people usually refer Brahmins as Parpanar. Now I uinder stand the Parpanar means one who see by virtue of their power, which the ordinary people can not see. In the long run it has been said that Parpanar. Is it right?

Every tradition and rituals have significance for its followers or the affected group.

Question such as this can be asked about some of today's practices as well. For example,
Why is there 21 gun salute, what is so special about number 21?
Why do people wear robes for graduation commencement ceremonies in a certain manner? Why should PhD graduation ceremony includes a hood while others do not? etc

When my kids were growing up I found the book below very useful.

:)

PS : Prati-abhivadianam is nothing but offering wishes like "Deergayushman Bhava" (May you live long); you can do this any number of times but who wants to?
PPS: You can do this for everyone but if you start falling on the feet of everyone like the auto-rikshaw person, he may think you are drunk

Sir

I am not aware of such meaning to ' Parpanar', Probably some pundits in Tamil in this Forum can clarify your doubts..

Just a possible response for the point number one. It takes into consideration one may have prosopagnosia so one needs to do it the second time, third time, ..., nth time

This "abhivAdaye" is/was more like a caste/varna Aadhar card back in the olden days. If a person could correctly recite his "abhivAdaye", then it went without question that he belonged to one of the three higher castes/varnas. The Shudras did not have any "abhivAdaye" to introduce themselves.

Today, this has lost almost any significance. The youngsters in most occasions do not consider it necessary to do a namaskAra to an elder. However, "abhivAdaye" has antique value!

..............PS : Prati-abhivadianam is nothing but offering wishes like "Deergayushman Bhava" (May you live long); you can do this any number of times but who wants to?.................

PratyabhivAdanam involves the elder repeating the name of the one who is doing abhivaadanam and wishing him well, Example: (Srinivasa) sarmann dheergayushmAn Bhava.

Overheard after an upanayanam ceremony. :ear:

Can we say 'ABHIVADAYE' to mother when she stands alone, after performing 'namaskaram'?

Some time back, one of the Kanchi Acharyas (name specifically not mentioned) said that we can say this to mother.
If there is one person in this world who does not need our abhivAdaye, it should be mother, because she will know all about you.

Nowadays, I find some pompously foolish IT-an youth reciting the whole abhivAdaye just to impress other about their religiosity. Beyond this they don't know much about even sandhyAvandanam!

We say abhivadaye to father, our relatives, local vadhyars etc.... and this prosopagnosia allowance seems far fetched to me.

Agreed, but it does not invalidate the current query.

They should preserve it carefully for their kids... and their grandchildren... and so on. :0)

Why only one abhivadanam is long and includes pravaram, gothram and shaka... the elders feel that they need not reveal their background to the younger? :)

PPS: You can do this for everyone but if you start falling on the feet of everyone like the auto-rikshaw person, he may think you are drunk
But surely, he will be impressed by the greatness of the abhivadanam and give me a free ride, no?

Your query is fine, but if you make a compilation of all the queries you can publish a book called 'the little book of tell me why of TB practices' - could stand to make some money :)
Just for passive income during retirement :)

Behavioral scientists say that is how a value system is formed in every human being. Some values come by telling and teaching, some by observing elders and peers and some by observing their bad effects and avoiding. So better preserve them for your children if you think you will have not time for them to sit with them and tell.

Why only one abhivadanam is long and includes pravaram, gothram and shaka... the elders feel that they need not reveal their background to the younger? :)

There is no need because the elder is just supposed to convey his good wishes. The one who does abhivadanam would have already assessed the elder as to his suitability for an abhivadanam. LOL.

So, one says all history behind his background and the other, by way of acknowledgement, simply wishes him ! The elder should say his background citing the great rishis of his lineage and the shaka and then bless him, I think.

But it will have only questions and no answers ;-P ! There may not be many takers. Perhaps I could rephrase the title as 'the enigmatic 1008 practices of clueless TBs'

எங்கே, யாருக்கு அபிவாதனம் செய்யக்கூடாது என்பதும் ஸ்மிருதியில் சொல்லப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. அவை;

Upanayanam :: List of rituals that are performed

Upanayanam (lit. "near-sight"), also called "sacred thread ceremony", is commonly known for being a Hindu Sanskar, rite-of-passage ritual, where the concept of Brahman is introduced to a young boy. The youngster is taught during the ceremony the secret of life through Brahmopadesam (revealing the nature of Brahman, the Ultimate Reality) or the Gayatri manthram. The hallmark of having gone through the Upanayana ceremony is the wearing of the Yajñopavītam (Sacred Thread) on the body. Yajñopavītam has three threads (actually only one thread, folded three times and tied together) each consisting of three strands. These threads represent:-
Goddess Gayatri (Goddess of mind)
Goddess Saraswati (Goddess of word) and
Goddess Savitri (Goddess of deed)
Upanayanam makes the person receiving it a Dwija, a twice-born! The initiation is done by the Upadesam of the Gayathri manthram. The manthram is a universal prayer that can be used by men of all climes and creeds, for, it calls upon the Glorious Power that pervades the Sun and the three words to arouse, awaken and strengthen the Intelligence, so that it may lead to intense Sadhana and Sadhana may lead to success.

"Nandhimukha" Ceremony

It is performed generally just a day before the Upanayanam to obtain the blessings of the family ancestors. The feast prepared for that day is also very specific.. Nandi in Sanskrit means the beginning, so with Nandi begins the actual rituals for the functions. Usually during the Nandisradham before Upanayanam, the Brahmins are fed and various Upacharams are offered to them. Atleast 9 brahmins are served food and dhanam is given to each of them.

"Uthakashanthi"

Uthakashanthi is conducted for the purification of the mind and body and the protection of the child. All names of the deities are chanted in the form of manthras and invoked in water and then poured over the child.

"Yagnopaveethadhaaranam"

Under the guidance of a guru, the sacred thread is placed by the father across the child’s left shoulder. Further, Moonji (a gridle made out of Munja grass) is tied around the child’s waist to protect the child’s purity and keep evils away.
"Kumara Bhojanam"

After the auspicious yagnopaveethadhaarana, the boy is fed along with a bramchari.

"Brahmopadesam"

Literally, Gayathri means which protects him who chants it. She is the mother of all the mantras, and when chanted with devotion and single pointed concentration and purity, takes the chanter to the ultimate bliss - the knowledge of the Supreme Truth, called the Brahman. The Gayathri is a mantra praying for divine guidance to inspire and illumine the intellect so that the Jiva may know his real self - the Atman. Universal in its approach, it does not seek any personal benefit for the chanter. The venerable Bhisma, while extolling the greatness of the Gayathri from his bed of arrows declares - Where the Gayathri is chanted, ultimately deaths, involving the performance of obsequies for children by their elders will not occur. Thus it is a prayer for universal welfare which the brahmin must perform as a sacred trust enjoined on him. Gayatri Mantra", the supreme mantra is whispered in the child’s ears by the father who becomes the guru for the child.

"Bhikshakaranam"

The child asks for alms of rice by saying “ Bhavadhi Bhiksandehi” from his mother and other women attending the function. It is done to control the ego, which enables the young vatu to control his senses and then essentially receive vedic knowledge.
"Abivathanam"

After Upanayanam the boy seeks blessings from the elders by doing namaskarams. The child then introduces himself by his “gotharam” and “suthram.”

"Sandhyavandanam"

Sandhyavandanam is an amalgamation of meditation and rituals. The principles of Yoga are the basis on which the rituals of Sandhyavandanam are designed. Sandhyavandana is a prescribed ‘nityakarma’ (Compulsory regular activity). Sandhya (the time of union) vandanam (worship) means a ritual done at the time of three junctions, Dawn, Noon and Dusk. Both worship and meditation are involved in Sandhyavandanam. Pranayama and Japam are involved in this activity. Salutations are offered to the lord to thank for what we constitute of, i.e. panchabhootas - earth, water, fire, space & air. In the prayers that form part of the Sandhyavandanam, we ask the Lord for long life, health and prosperity and ultimately, we ask for more “gnana.” All these are included in the mantra. The very performance itself gives the result.
