The Home Ministry under Rajnath Singh today (1 June) launched an online tool to monitor the flow of funds through organisations falling under the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act, or FCRA.

In a press release, the ministry said that tool will enable lawmakers and bureaucrats in different departments of the government to monitor the funds and how they are being used in reality.

There are close to 25,000 organisations registered under the FCRA that are eligible to receive funds from foreign donors for promoting social, cultural, economic, educational and religious activities. However, it has been argued for long that the foreign funds are being utilised for illegal conversions through sinister means. The need for such a tool, that can bring transparency to the utilisation of the funds, was therefore being felt.

In 2016-17, organisations under FCRA received over Rs 18,000 crore of foreign funding, according to the release. According to the ministry statement,

“It gives them capacity to take data-driven and evidence-based decisions regarding the compliance of the provisions of the FCRA, 2010. It has analytical features to conduct big data mining and data exploration. Its dashboard will be integrated with the bank accounts of the FCRA-registered entities through the Public Financial Management System for updation of transactional data on a real-time basis.”

Seven years later, it makes a comeback in the 91 to 100 band.

The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bengaluru has made it to the list of top 100 in the Times Higher Education (THE) World Reputation Rankings 2018. The last time it was featured was in 2011.

The annual ranking highlights the top 100 global university brands, which now includes IISc in the 91 to 100 band.

Commenting on the rankings, Phil Baty, editorial director of Global Rankings for THE, said, "Only 100 institutions in the world make it to this annual list of the most powerful university brands, so it is a highly significant achievement to be included -- and fantastic to see an Indian presence this year."

The list was compiled from a globally representative survey of more than 10,000 senior academics. IISc was the only Indian institute to have made it this year.

The surface-to-surface missile was launched with the help of a mobile launcher from launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range at Dr Abdul Kalam Island in the Bay of Bengal, Odisha, at 9:48 am.

India on Sunday successfully test-fired its indigenously developed nuclear capable Long Range Ballistic Missile Agni-5 with a strike range of 5,000 km from Dr Abdul Kalam Island off the Odisha coast.

The surface-to-surface missile was launched with the help of a mobile launcher from launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Dr Abdul Kalam Island in the Bay of Bengal at 9:48 am, defence sources said.

This was the sixth trial of the state-of-the-art Agni-5. The missile covered its full distance during the trial which was a total success, they said.

“The flight performance of the missile was tracked and monitored by radars, tracking instruments and observation stations all through the mission,” the sources said.

Unlike other missiles of the series, Agni-5 is the most advanced with new technologies in terms of navigation and guidance, warhead and engine, said a Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) official.

The Indian Railways and the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways are coming together to build a high-speed rail line along the proposed expressway between Mumbai and Nagpur, Financial Express has reported.

According to the daily’s report, which quotes a senior Railway Ministry official, a feasibility study conducted by Spanish consultant Ineco on the constructing a high-speed rail line along the proposed expressway has yielded positive results.

The accusation of land, which is one of the most problematic parts of executing an infrastructure project, will become easier as the two agencies plan to coordinate their efforts. Many infrastructure projects, including the Mumbai-Ahmadabad High-Speed Rail Corridor, have been delayed due to issues related to land accusation.

“It’s a new way of executing the project faster, as the combined efforts to acquire land will ease a major burden for both ministries and pave the way for speedy execution,” the daily quoted the Railway official as saying.

Joint working in the planning phase and construction of bridges and underpasses is expected to save time and lower expenditure for the two.

Let us all beat the plastic pollution.

World Environment Day 2018 theme, slogan: Moving towards a plastic-free future

world-environment-day-759.jpg

Ever since its conception in 1974, World Environment Day has had a special theme relating to the pressing environmental concern at the time. The theme for the year 2018 is “Beat Plastic Pollution”, and is a call for individuals to take charge of their surroundings and realise the severity of using plastic in daily life.

India will be hosting the World Environment Day this year, which is one of the most important days observed by the UN worldwide. A platform for encouraging awareness and propagating the need for protecting the environment, this day will be celebrated on June 5.
Ever since its conception in 1974, World Environment Day has had a special theme relating to the pressing environmental concern at the time. The theme for the year 2018 is “Beat Plastic Pollution”.

Plastic, which is rampantly polluting our water bodies, harming marine life and posing a threat to human health, has been one of the major concerns of environmental bodies this year. Though a large part of the population depends on plastic for their daily use, nearly one-third of it is not disposed off properly and ends up clogging drains and choking the environment. Plastic can persist in the environment for nearly a thousand years before it fully disintegrates and keeping this in mind, many organisations and governments are always on the lookout for alternatives to tackle this menace.

[h=2]Maruti Suzuki aims to produce as many as 35,000 electric cars annually in India starting 2020-21, when it rolls out the first of these cars in the country[/h]
New Delhi: Suzuki Motor Corp., the parent of India’s largest carmaker, aims to produce as many as 35,000 electric cars annually in India starting 2020-21, when it rolls out the first of these cars in the country, two people familiar with the matter said.

“Suzuki will venture into the electric vehicle market quite late compared to some of its competitors. That’s why they wanted to make sure the foray into electric should be sustainable and gradually gain volume. The battery plant was crucial and now the management has internally decided on 30,000-35,000 units per annum from FY21,” said one of the two people, requesting anonymity. A spokesperson for Maruti Suzuki declined to “give any guidance”.

While rivals such as Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd and Tata Motors Ltd are already manufacturing electric vehicles by sourcing half of the components from overseas vendors, Suzuki plans to set up the full ecosystem, starting with a lithium-ion battery plant, before unit Maruti begins selling the vehicles in India.

Affordable home loans worry RBI

rbi-reuters.jpg

Under PMAY, the government offers interest subsidy of 6.5% to individuals with income of up to Rs 3 lakh.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Reserve Bank has warned that it will make it more expensive for banks to give small-ticket loans under the affordable housing scheme and force borrowers to pony up more money if banks don’t tighten standards and address rising bad loans in the segment.

The central bank said it is closely monitoring the segment of loans up to Rs 2 lakh and will step in to increase the loan-to-value ratio or raise the risk weight for banks should the need arise. “After a careful analysis of the housing loans data, it has been observed that the level of NPAs for ticket size of up to Rs 2 lakh has been high and is rising briskly,” the RBI monetary policy statement said. “Banks need to strengthen their screening and follow up in respect of lending to this segment. ”..

Affordable housing refers to houses with a carpet size of up to 600 sq ft in non-metros and up to 345 sq ft in metros. A massive push by the government to increase the number of houses built and occupied under this scheme has led to a large number of banks and housing finance companies rushing in to offer credit.

Kudos to the authorities concerned for containing this potentially explosive epidemic

The unsung heroes at the helm of Kerala's battle against Nipah

sgjphBdifbddg.jpg

Doctors and patients wear safety masks as a precautionary measure after the Nipah virus outbreak at a medical college in Kozhikode.

The Nipah virus that is still on the minds of Indians had its epicenter in Calicut, Kerala. The virus has claimed the lives of at least a dozen people. The virus outbreak initially caused big concern among the public and health officials. The outbreak of this virus is not new. In 2001, India confirmed its first Nipah outbreak in Siliguri, West Bengal which resulted in 45 deaths. A second outbreak in Nadia district claimed the lives of 5 people.

Human to human transmission is a way for this virus to spread. The hospitals and health centres where treatment was being given to those who tested positive is a potentially harmful and dangerous place to work. Kerala Health Minister K K Shylaja Teacher praised the doctors and nurses who were quick to respond in handling the cases saying in part, “It's because of so many health officials, doctors, nurses and support staff, who tirelessly worked day and night, that we have been able to contain the outbreak so swiftly”.

P Dhanapal was once the head of the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) department of the Tamil Nadu government. In his position as the head of the department, he would have been the man answerable for the proper upkeep and maintenance of hundreds of temples and related artefacts across the state.

And today, the police is going after him for conspiring to steal gold and other precious metals for making a new idol at the centuries-old Palani Dandayuthapaniswamy Temple.

The case against the former chief of HR&CE is that he was instrumental in the conspiracy to embezzle over Rs 60 lakh in 2003 towards the purchase of gold for making a new idol at the temple.

Apart from temple funds, huge quantities of gold appear to have been collected from the devotees.

  • Tamil Nadu has emerged as the second largest state in creating employment, EPF data revealed. It is going about doing its business without a fuss.
[/FONT]

Data from the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) on 25 May this year showed that 39.36 lakh jobs were created in the country’s organised sector in the second half of the last financial year that ended in March. A surprising revelation in the data was Tamil Nadu being second among the states in creating employment in the organised sector. Over 4.65 lakh people got jobs during this period in the state.

For those who have been viewing developments in the state with concerns over protests and violence in some parts dominating the political scenario, it could have been a surprise. But not to those officials who have been silently going about doing their job. “Between September 2017 and April 2018, we have created employment for 5.1 lakh persons in Tamil Nadu. We, as a state, may not be seen making big statements but we have been going about in our own way,” says M Velmurugan, Executive Vice-Chairman, Tamil Nadu Industrial Guidance and Export Promotion Bureau.

The general public may need to know as to who is the officially declared treasurer…

And why the medias are silent on this…?

What is the role of the Election Commission....?

The BJP's Mystery Treasurer Has a 1000 Crore Touch But Nobody Knows His Name

BJP_Reuters.jpg

Credit: Reuters/Amit Dave
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Finance minister Piyush Goyal was the last declared treasurer of the party. Whether he continues to hold the post de facto or has been replaced is something the BJP is hiding from both the public and the Election Commission.

New Delhi:
The Bharatiya Janata Party is one of the richest political parties in the world, with a declared income of Rs 1,034 crore during 2016-17, the last year for which returns have been filed with the Election Commission.

This was a particularly good year for the BJP, with its income shooting up by a stupendous 81% compared to the year before. More significantly, the money raised by the party was more than double the figure raised by all other national parties combined.
So which BJP leader should take a bow for the amazing financial performance of the party and having given it the biggest ever war chest ahead of the crucial 2019 Lok Sabha elections?

This is where things get murky, and a huge question mark emerges over the role of the Election Commission (EC), which is supposed to regulate and audit the working of political parties, in addition to conducting elections in the country.
In its mandatory declarations to the EC, the BJP for the past few years has not been disclosing who its treasurer is. The BJP’s audited returns for 2016-17, for example, have an indecipherable signature which appears to say “for treasurer”, without disclosing who the party’s treasurer actually is.

India is staying away from the Belt and Road initiative.

India stands its ground, refuses to endorse China’s Belt and Road Initiative in SCO summit

India has been firm in her opposition to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. The recent dissent by India in the now-concluded Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO)summit in Qingdao, China is a mere extension of India’s pre-defined stance on the proposed initiative.

India has made her stance clear in SCO foreign ministers meet in April. At that point of time, the SCO declaration did not name India as one of the supporters of BRI.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his plenary speech stated the premise for India’s opposition to the proposed initiative by stating, India welcomes connectivity projects which respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Nations.
The SCO summit, which went on for two days, the eight full members signed the Qingdao joint declaration. India was not included in the part of the joint declaration which dealt with BRI. Interestingly, barring this one instance where every member has been named, in all other instances the term “member states” has been used.

[h=1]MHA NOOSE TIGHTENS AROUND PVT COMPANIES[/h]
The Ministry of Home affairs (MHA), which recently eased penalties on NGOs for violating Foreign contribution (regulation) Act, has started crackdown on private limited companies receiving foreign funds in violation of FCRA Act 2010.

The MHA, which has so far cancelled more than 18,000 licenses of NGOs for alleged violation of FCRA, in its recent investigation found that foreign donors have now changed their strategies and instead of giving donations to NGOs, they are routing money through private limited companies, mostly owned by the trusties of these NGOs or new entities, to carry on their activities without being noticed.
Investigation further revealed that in many cases several NGOs after receiving foreign donations, transferred this money to private limited companies in total violation of FCRA norms.

For example, activists Teesta Setalvad received Rs 2 crore in her private ltd company, Sabrang Communication and publishing private limited, in which she and her husband Javed Anand are directors. Teesta and her husband are facing criminal case against them and are out on bail.

Priest in Andhra Pradesh to carry a Dalit man into Vaishnavite temple

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Vijaya Kumar’s source of inspiration was CS Rangarajan, priest of the Balaji temple at Chilkur on the outskirts of Hyderabad, who on April 16 carried a Dalit on his shoulders into Ranganatha temple at Jiaguda where Parasari offered prayers.

The recent initiative undertaken by a priest in Hyderabad of carrying a local Dalit devotee on his shoulders into a Vaishnavite temple has inspired another priest from Andhra Pradesh’s Kadapa district to re-enact the ceremony in a move to propagate the concept of “equality of all.”

The priest, Kalyanapuram Vijaya Kumar, will carry 70-year-old Kullai Chinna Narsimhulu, on his shoulders into the Mohana Ranganayaka Swamy temple in Guntur town, on June 14, in a procession.

Organ transplant racket surfaces in Tamil Nadu

International patients get priority in cadaver transplants, bypassing long list of Indians

An organ transplant racket has surfaced in Tamil Nadu. Officials of the Union Ministry of Health & Family Welfare have found that hearts harvested from brain-dead patients were given to foreign nationals, bypassing Indian patients on the waiting list.

In 2017, foreigners got about 25% of all heart transplants in the State and 33% of lung transplants.

Based on a specific input that at least three hearts retrieved from brain-dead patients were given to international patients in recent months in Chennai, the Directorate General of Health Services convened an urgent meeting in New Delhi recently and framed strict guidelines for allocation of organs to foreigners.

“It is difficult to digest that Indian hearts are not matching with our own Indian patients but matching with foreigners. How’s it possible... It seems that Indian money is not matching with foreigners’ money. Really sorry to write that we are so greedy (that) we don’t bother to help poor Indian patients and (are) trying to manipulate (the waiting list) for foreigners,” Prof. Vimal Bhandari, Director, National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (NOTTO), said in a message on a WhatsApp group set up for the purpose of organ allocation.

ED seizes under construction building

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) today seized 11 plots of land in Patna worth Rs 44.75 crore, attached by the agency in the name of a firm linked to RJD chief Lalu Prasad's family, as part of the IRCTC hotel money laundering case.

The central probe agency was allowed to take possession of the seized assets by a designated PMLA authority recently.

Officials said possession documents were notified and a huge notice board, bearing the signature of Assistant Director of the Delhi zonal office-I, was today put up at the contiguous plots, measuring about three acres, in Danapur near the Bihar capital.

The action has been undertaken under section 8 of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, they said.

The central probe agency had provisionally attached the plots, valued at Rs 44.75 crore (market rate), in December last year under the PMLA, in connection with the IRCTC hotel allotment case.

The authority, in its recent order, had said that the assets were "involved in money laundering."

Congress Wins Bengaluru's Jayanagar Seat

Today's result in Jayanagar elections is in the expected lines. This has been a BJP stronghold and held by (Late) B N Vijayakumar, a Brahmin candidate, who died suddenly after filing his nomination as a BJP candidate. BJP put his brother for the seat. But he was defeated by a narrow margin of 2889 votes by Congress candidate Mrs Soumya Reddy, first time candidate and daughter of Mr Ramalinga Reddy, former Home Minister. JD(S) wisely withdrew from the elections and supported Congress.

Jayanagar a middle class locality of educated people, always returned BJP. But this time most of the BJP supporters did not vote to show their displeasure against BJP's neglect of middle class.

If the Central Government did not wake up and take corrective action in time, I am afraid results of next elections in 2019 will not be different. BJP may have to face resistance from its own supporters.
People's expectations are high and they do not accept statistics and advertisements in media.
