THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:

Chennai Fine Arts, a cultural organization based in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, will honour Vidushi Parassala Ponnammal with

Lifetime Achievement Award at a function to be held today. Prince Aswathi Tirunal Rama Varma will preside over the function and

present the award. R Sridhar will be the other guest of honour. The function will be held at Theerthapaada Mandapam, East Fort at 6.00 pm.

Since its inception in the year 2003, the organization has honoured many veterans like Dr T K Murthy, Prof T N Krishnan, R K Srikantan,

Dr. N Ramani to name a few. Last year, CFA honoured Parur M S Anantharaman during the occasion of Maharaja Swati Tirunal's Bicentenary

celebration.

Ponnammal will present a brief concert after the award, accompanied by Vaikkom Padma Krishnan (Violin), Udupi Balakrishnan (Mrdangam)

and Trivandrum Rajesh (Ghatam). The programme is open to public.

Popularized by MS Subbulakshmi, 'Bruhi Mukundethi' is a Sadashiva Brahmendra composition. 2013 IndianRaga Fellow Harsha Nagarajan set it to a ragamalika in ragams Kurinji, Kapi, Nagaswarali, and Hamsanandi, in this unique interpretation. The piece is preceded by a Thani Avarthanam to showcase the brilliance of our young mridangists.

An unforgettable melody in an unforgettable voice. Extreme devotion, sweetness, perfection of notes, who else could it be but melody queen Madam M. S. Subbulakshmi! She plays the male role of mythological Saint Narada to perfection.

Here is a very rare gem and most famous song of Savithri (1941) starring two melody queens: Madam Shanta Apte as Savithri and Madam M. S. Subbulakshmi as Narada. Madam Shanta Apte was a classically-trained legendary Hindi and Marathi singing star. Such was her devotion to her career that she learnt Tamil just to act in this film. Her delightful melodies have also been uploaded.

The huge box-office hit was directed by the hero of the movie, Y. V. Rao, also starring singing comedians Vinoth and Menaka. One of the best musicals with tunes composed by Papanasam Sivam.

Kakarla Tyagabrahmam
(4 May 1767 – 6 January 1847), also known as Tyāgayya in Telugu, Tyāgarājar in Tamil, was one of the greatest composers of Carnatic music or Indian classical music. He was a prolific composer and highly influential in the development of the classical music tradition. Tyagaraja composed thousands of devotional compositions, most in praise of Lord Rama, many of which remain popular today. Of special mention are five of his compositions called the Pancharatna Kritis which are often sung in programs in his honour.

Avasarala Kanyakumari is a renowned female Carnatic music violinist from South India.
Kanyakumari is a native of Vijayanagaram, Andhra Pradesh and has been living in Chennai for more than 4 decades.She belongs to a family of musicians.Her parents Sri Avasarala Ramarathnam and Smt.Jayalakshmi encouraged her immensely to pursue music.

Listening to her sparkling brighas and intricate sangatis while she had just started to tread her musical journey, the respected music critic Subbudu compared her music to the ever glittering diamond stud in the nose ring of the goddess Kanyakumari. Ever since she has received innumerable accolades and praise from audiences worldwide and discerning critics for her innovation, accompaniment and solo performances while at the same time strictly adhering to the Carnatic music tradition. Needless to say it is her dedication and sincere hardwork along with the able guidance of her gurus Ivaturi Vijeshwara Rao, M. Chandrasekharan and M. L. Vasanthakumari which have groomed her into a front ranking violinist. Her extensive experience spanning more than 4 decades combined with a sharp acumen and fine sense of creativity has earned her a distinct place.She has evolved her own style of melodious playing and silken bowing which closely resembles vocal music rhapsodising audiences all over.

She has many successful creative innovations to her credit. "Vadya Lahari" her brain child is a new combo of the violin, veena and Nadaswaram. "Tristhayi sangamam" Confluence of 3 violins playing in different octaves portraying a special dimension. "Carnatic Music Ensembles" of 25, 50, 75 and 100 violins as well as 100 instrument ensemble commemorating the millennium A music piece "100 ragamalika swarams" which exposes her dexterity in bringing out the raga swaroopam in just one avarthana each. 29 hours non stop marathon performance

She has dedicated her life to music and is grateful to the Almighty, gurus, parents, students, sabhas, critics and rasikas for their continued support. Recently she has composed 7 ragas bearing the names of the 7 hills of Thirumala.

Aruna Sairam (sometimes spelt Sayeeram) is a carnatic music vocalist born in Bombay, India. She learnt music from her mother Rajalakshmi Sethuraman and later from T. Brinda. She has done a Masters in Music. She has given several international concerts. She was an expert in the World Music conference in Germany. She is also an A-grade artist with the All India Radio.

Repertoire includes rare compositions of Syama Sastri and Dikshitar. Popular for Abhangs, Tamil songs and Devarnamas. Has launched and performed extremely popular program “Samantar”, (meaning parallel lines) with Hindustani singer Smt. Neela Bhagawat.

Composed, directed and sang around the world for choreographic production of internationally acclaimed dancer Chandralekha. Nominated as Expert to select recipients of All India Scholarship in music awarded by Department of Culture, Govt. of India.

Balasaraswati (1918-1984) was a native of Madras and personified the Tanjore interpretation of bharata natyam, a classical dance style from South India. At her debut as a seven-year-old, she was admired for pure technique and facility with abhinaya or expressive mime, attributes that continued to be praised throughout her lifetime. Balasaraswati was the seventh generation in her family to be associated with classical dance and music. She was trained initially by the eminent Kundappa Pillai who, with his brothers, codified a training system for dancers. An affinity for mesmerizing audiences made Balasaraswati a veritable ambassador for bharata natyam outside India, appearing first in 1961 in Tokyo, launching her earliest North American tour in 1962 at Jacob's Pillow, and performing at the Edinburgh Festival in the following year. As a teacher and artist in residence, she was associated with several American universities and with the Balasaraswati School of Music and Dance in Berkeley. At home in India, she received many awards, including the title Exemplary Golden Lotus, usually received by outstanding statesmen and scholars.
