Sri IyerRP wishes to know the meanings of words used in Aupaasanam.

Why not approach the learned aachaaryas themselves when they are free?

Briefly, after usual prayer to Vinaayaka as remover of obstacles, praanaayaamam (breath-control) with saptha-vyahruthis and gaayathri, you make a solemn promise (sankalppam) undertaking that you are performing morning or evening aupaasanam (fire-sacrifice as a married couple). Your pathni's participation is essential.

You build the square fire-altar (If you are not already maintaining the gaarhapathya-agni).

After your pathni has brought the fire and poured it into the agni-kuntam, you pronounce mathrams invoking the protection of athithi-devi, anumathi-devi and sarasvathi-devi by drooling water along the southern, western, and northern walls of your agni-kuntam. You also circle water around the top, starting from the north-eastern corner, seeking the blessing of savitha-devatha.

You solemnly invoke the presence of agni into the sacrificial fire. You chant prostrations to the eight dik-devathaas, i.e. indra, agni, yama, nirurithi, varuna, vaayu, soman, eeshaanan, and also to agni, (your own) aathma, and all Braahmanas present. (You sprinkle akshatha on the Braahmanas.)

You ensure the fire is blazing bright and strong. You make offerings in it to suryan, agni, the three principal vyaahruthis, to prajaapathi, to agni, and to agni as svishtakritha-devatha. Then you send the three guadian-devis back, i.e. athithi-devi, anumathi-devi and sarasvathi-devi by drooling water again along the southern, western and northern walls of your agni-kuntam.

You chant the three anaa-gnyaatha manthrams seeking forgiveness for any omissions.

You make agnir-upasthaanam to send back the agni-devathaa from your sacrificial fire. You chant manthrams seeking agni-devatha's forgiveness for any lack of or mis-chanting of manthrams, lack of or mis-performance of actions and gestures, lack of devotion or attention. You pray for remedies for these errors. As repentnce and restitution for all offences and mistakes you chant the sacred name of Krishna ten times.

You pronounce further three manthrams in praise of the three principal agnis -- gaarhapathya, dakshina, aahavaneeya, and all other important agnis. You make prostrations to yagnesvara as principal deity of all yagnyams (homams).

You identify Bhagavaan Shree Mahaa Vishnu's various names as yagnesvara Himself and chant his praises.

That normally concludes your aupaasanam.

However, you are strongly advised to continue with chanting agni-gaayathri, navagraha manthrams (sooktham), panchaakshara maha-manthram, durga sooktham, shree-sooktham, bhaagya-sooktham, aahavaneeya mahaa-manthram, and whatever you are entitled to ((i.e. have obtained guru-mukha upadesham to do).

Hope above is useful.

Aasheervaathams.

S Narayanaswamy Iyer
