Where is the dollar?

Where is the missing dollar ?

Three friends went to a hotel. The bill was $ 75/-
Each one contributed $ 25/-.
The waiter took the bill to the cashier.
The cashier was happy & decided to give them a discount of $ 5/-

and
asked the waiter to return them $ 5/-.
Now the waiter was confused. How to distribute $5 among 3 persons?
He kept $2 in his pocket & gave one dollar to each one of the 3 persons.
So initially each one had contributed $ 25. Now as they are given 1 dollar back, their contribution gets reduced to $ 24.
They all contributed $24 -- that is 24x3=$72 plus $2 is in the waiters pocket.
The total becomes $74. But they had paid $ 75.
Where is the remaining 1 dollar ?

Not quite

The way to reason about this is as follows:

$25 x 3 = $75.

Cashier returns $5.

The waiter returns $1 per person, so each person has contributed $24.

$24 x 3 = $72 = $70 + $2.

$70 stays with the cashier, and $2 stays with the waiter. No question of a missing dollar. Simple.

The answer is as follows.

The three men contributed $ 25 each.

The total is $75.OK!

The cashier gives a discount of $5.

The waiter not knowing how to divide equally gives them $3.

Remaining amount = $5-$3 = $2.

Waiter pockets $2 as tip.

Original total = $75.

New total = $75 - $2 = $ 73.

Conversely,

$73+$2 = $75.
