Masigam, sothakumbam

Sir,
Kindly clarify
If the elder brother (due to pre-occupied work schedule) could not perform sothakumbam or monthly masyams, younger brothers are not supposed to do it. Whether the younger brothers will be affected due to non-performing (if the elder is not physically available, what can the younger brothers do). Is it will be considered sin [bhabam] ? Will it affect varisu of younger brothers ?
Kindly reply to [email protected] or to the main forum.
Thank you

During varushaptheekam time your elder brother if can do masyam it is o.k. Nothing will happen to anybody.it will never affect vaarisu of younger brothers.

Are you saying this based on any reference or authority? Eldest son has the right and the duty, fine. Dont the rest be eager or concerned that these are done per the prescribed norms?

If the elder brother is unable to do the usual mAsikams, UnamAsikams, sOdak(ak)umbhams, etc., say, because of physical inability like being bedridden, going out of the country, imprisonment or somesuch reason beyond his control, he may do all that is necessary to make up for the lapse, at the time of the Abdeekam (varsha means year, abda also means an year, so varshAbdeekam is double statement like "go paSu"!).

But if the first son is not inclined to do these due to his not having belief, having become a nAstika, converted himself to Christianity/Islam (this is also nowadays happening), then it is your duty to take up the matter with him, and if he cleverly pleads that he has no money, then finance it. But if this is not also possible, I will say that you give for "annadAnam" to poor brahmins in one of the old age homes for poor brahmins on the days of rites.

If the elder brother has abdicated his duty of dperforming masikam, oonamsikam etc.he carries the pitru saapam and reaps the consequences. The younger brother should perform all the rituals on behalf of the elder one to lead the departed soul to salvation.
