Recently, I read this book:
The Vedas by Sri Chandrasekhandra Saraswati

It was very concise and provided a plethora of information. Most I liked about the book was that it provided everything about vedas in a nutshell. From there, one can hunt for more information and expand. I read it in 3 sittings, unable to keep it down (during a good weekend - free from household chores).

Book is available here:

Yes. This book is really good and gives an overview of vedas. I would also recommend "Hindu Dharma" , His "theivathin kural" translation. Those are my bedtime reads these days.

I have read Hindu Dharma. And started on the other one - it is bit long - 7 or 8 volumes. But as you said, very resourceful.
