Portmanteau Words

When new discoveries and inventions are made and new technologies are developed, new terms, new concepts, new problems and issues and even new diseases are born! So we feel the need of suitable expressions to name them. Where do we get them from?

One way is for the user to take two already existing words and just join them together (i.e., literally remove the space between them!) A new word which gives a different meaning altogether is created, as in book + worm = bookworm, or, green + house = greenhouse, or, wind + fall = windfall and so on. (Original 'bookworm' is actually a worm which eats - literally - the pages of the book and is not considered here.)

There is another, rather a more fascinating way, new words get coined from old words. Here, a bit of this word and a bit of that word are taken, abracadabra, and lo, behold! A new word, with a totally new meaning is born! Such words are known as ‘portmanteau’ words!

Want examples?

breakfast + lunch = brunch; internal + communication = intercom; transfer + resistor = transistor; electronic + mail = email; emotion + icon = emoticon; smoke + fog = smog; flounce + blunder = flounder; haggle + tussle = hassle; high + fidelity = hi-fi; science + fiction = sci-fi; gene + chromosome = genome; free + software = freeware; pulsating + star = pulsar; Hindi + English = Hinglish; motor + hotel = motel; information + entertainment = infotainment; medical + care = medicare; documentary + drama = docudrama; sea + landscape = seascape; breath + analyzer = breathalyzer ; camera + recorder = camcorder ; parachute + trooper = paratrooper and so on and on and on.
There is even a country name which is a portmanteau word because it was formed by combining two separate countries into one! Tanganyika + Zanzibar = Tanzania!

At times, rarely though, the spelling of the newly formed word takes on new letters, not found in either of the parent words, due to their pronunciation, as in, picture + element = pixel;

There are not so well-known portmanteau words too, such as, chuckle + snort = chortle; channel + tunnel = chunnel; fantastic + fabulous = fantabulous; gasoline + alcohol = gasohol; splash + surge = splurge; spoon + fork = spork; man + animal = manimal and so on.

My request to all interested members: If you come across rare portmanteau words, please do post them, for the benefit of all!

Portmanteau words using the word SEX

SEX + exPERT = SEXPERT

SEX + exERCISE = SEXERCISE

SEX + exPLOIT(S) = SEXPLOIT(S)

SEX + exPLOITATION = SEXPLOITATION

Pls. don't mind the words. It is just fun. Nothing obscene

Nothing can beat this three word combination

in Tamil , looking very harmless too !

குட்டி + பல்லி + சனியன் = குல்லியன். :D

Shri Maniya ji,

Of course, even many more such words can be formed! After all, 'SEX' is a very powerful exciter, you see. I intentionally avoided using those words. It would help if people really post unusual and rare portmanteau words to help us all to improve our vocabulary.

Certainly, Mrs. V.R.! After all, the concept of formation of 'Portmanteau words' is not language-specific. I am sure there do exist such words in all languages. It would be really an interesting exercise to find them and bringing them to the knowledge of our worthy members.

As a matter of fact, unlike the European languages, in Indian languages, the portmanteau system is in-built in the basic grammar itself,

For example, in Tamil, we have "inimai + Sol = Insol" or "Vemmai + Thazhal = Venthazhal" and so on.

In Hindi, we have, 'Pradhaana' + Aacharya' = 'Praacharya' !

There must be several more like this, in all Indian languages.

dear friends!

That brings us to the end of the list of portmanteau words better known to us.

One long list of Portmanteau words has been produced with the help of a computer

which has fused all words which can ever be fused together.

So the list is very long and very weird since it is made by a P.C bringing in all

possible combination- without bothering to find out whether those sets of words

will ever need to be fused!.

Interestingly Lewis Carroll is the man credited with thinking up these kind of

combined words. I got the list of 19 words used by him in his poem Jabberwocky.

But that is more like hieroglyphics than Latin and French! Since I could not

decipher those 19 words I got, I did not present them here.

I thank Mr. CLN for giving my complete freedom to write in his thread !

I hope he will come up with more brain activating names of words soon !

with warm regards to Mr. CLN and all the readers of this thread,

Visalakshi Ramani. :pray2:
P.S.

No wonder I could not decipher the above referred poem.

Apparently its other name is "nonsense verse!"
