Just saw a poll result on Nitya Karma Vs Pitru tarpanam on Amavasya.

As Sri Paramacharya mentions in Deivathin Kural Snanam(which in itself is a Nithya Karma) itself has five angas and one of them is Deva/Pitru Tarpanam, which is differnet from the naimithika pitru tarpanam.(Amavasya for example)

The following is the sloka:

Sankalpam Suktha Patanam Marjanam Agamarshanam Deva Pitru
Tarpanam cha Snanam Panchanga Uchyate.

1. Sankalpam
2. Recitation of Varuna Suktham
3. Marjanam(Both Mantra snanam with Apo hishta mantram and dipping in water)
4. Reciting Agamarshana Suktham while still immersed in water
5. At the end Argyam to Devas and Pithrus

This is common to all Brahmacharis and Gruhasthas.

Also after the Prathas Sandhyavandanam, one is to perform Rishi (similar to Avani Avittam Tarpanam and Pitru Tarpanam) on a daly basis.

This has to be done even if Pita is Jivita.

Regards,
The topic there was about amavasya tarpanam. It was held in the olden days that the amavasya tarpanam should be performed only after mid noon because the day time up to noon was for the devas and then for pitr^s. If one calls the pitr^s (aavaahanam) to his house early in the morning (other than as part of snaanam where there is no formal aavaahanam and aasanam offered to the manes) then he should not do avaahanam of any devata, that means any deva pooja except simple recitation without aavaahanam, aasanam, abhishekam, etc. If someone does so he incurs the displeasure of the deva/devata.

One anecdote: there was one poor vadhyar who stuck to rules diligently and refused to assist a rich brahmin zamindar to perform tarpanam before madhyaahnam. In a vengeful act, the zamindar removed that vadhyar and appointed another compliant vadhyar and also used his influence so that the poor, diligent vadhyar had ultimately, to go to the city for subsistence.
