வேதக் கணக்கு என்பதாக ஒரு நூல் தற்காலத்தில் பெரிதும் பிரபலமாக இருக்கிறது. இது ஏதோ ரிக் யஜுர் சாம அல்லது அதர்வண வேதத்தின் ஒரு பகுதி என்பது போன்ற மாயை ஏற்பட்டுள்ளது. சொல்லப் போனால் இதற்கும் வேதத்திற்கும் சம்பந்தமில்லை.

இப்பொழுது ஒரு உண்மையான வேதக் கணக்கைப் பார்ப்போம்.

யஜுர் வேதத்தில் சமகம் என்று ஒரு பகுதி உள்ளது. (4வது காண்டம் 7வது ப்ரபாடகம்). சிவ வழிபாட்டில் இது ருத்ரம் என்ற தோத்திரத்துடன் (4வது காண்டம் 5வது பிரபாடகம்) சேர்த்தே சொல்லப்படுகிறது. இது ரிஷி இறைவனுக்கு வைக்கும் கோரிக்கைப் பட்டியல். வேதத்தின் எப்பகுதியிலும் இத்தகைய நீண்ட கோரிக்கைப் பட்டியல் இல்லை என்பது குறிப்பிடத் தக்கது. மேலும் வேதத்தின் மற்ற பகுதிகள் எல்லாம் எங்களுக்குச் செல்வம் கொடு, எங்களுக்கு வலிமை கொடு என்று பன்மையில் வேண்ட இது மட்டுமே எனக்கு என்று ஒருமையில் வேண்டுகிறது.

ச மே என்ற சொற்கள் திரும்பத் திரும்ப வருவதால் இது சமகம் எனப்படுகிறது. ச என்பது எண் உம்மைப் பொருளுடையது. அதாவது ஆங்கிலத்தில் and என்ற சொல்லுக்கு நேரானது. மே என்பது எனக்கு என்ற பொருள் தருவது. உணவும் எனக்கு, உணவளிக்கும் மனமும் எனக்கு, பரிசுத்தமும் எனக்கு, உற்சாகமும் எனக்கு என்று இப்படிப் பல பொருட்களைப் பட்டியலிட்டு இவை யக்ஞத்தால் (முயற்சியால்) உண்டாக்கப்படட்டும் என்று நிறைவடைகிறது.

11 பகுதிகள் கொண்ட இந்தப் பட்டியலில் 11வது பகுதியாக வருவது தான் இன்று நாம் எடுத்துக் கொண்ட வேதக் கணக்கு.

ஏகா ச மே திஸ்ரச் ச மே பஞ்ச ச மே என்று தொடரும் இதில் 1 3 5 7 9 11 13 15 17 19 21 23 25 27 29 3133 என்று ஒரு தொடரும் (ஒன்றும் எனக்கு, மூன்றும் எனக்கு, ஐந்தும் எனக்கு, ஏழும் எனக்கு .....) 4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36 40 44 48 என்று ஒரு தொடரும் (நான்கும் எனக்கு, எட்டும் எனக்கு, பன்னிரண்டும் எனக்கு, பதினாறும் எனக்கு) வருகின்றன.

1= பிரகிருதி, 3= முக்குணம், 5= பஞ்ச பூதங்கள், 7= ஞானேந்திரியங்களும் மனமும் புத்தியும்,
4= புருஷார்த்தங்கள், 8= வேதங்களும் உபவேதங்களும் என்று இந்த ஒவ்வொரு எண்ணுக்கும் தத்துவ ரீதியான விளக்கம் தரப்படுகிறது. முன்னூறுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட தேவைகளைத் தெளிவுபட விளக்கிக் கோரிய ரிஷி ஏன் இந்த இடத்தில் மட்டும் மர்மமாக எண்ணிக்கை மூலம் தெரிவிக்கிறார் என்பது புதிராக உள்ளது. மேலும் விளக்கங்களில் காணப்படும் மூன்று குணங்கள், நான்கு புருஷார்த்தங்கள், குறிப்பாக மோக்ஷம் போன்ற சில கருத்துருக்கள் ஸம்ஹிதைகளில் வேறு எங்கும் காணப்படவில்லை. எனவே அதில் கணிதம் சம்பந்தப்பட்டதாக ஏதோ இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று தோன்றுகிறது.

Now let us see a real Vedic mathematical problem.

Chamakam is part of Yajur Veda. (4th Kanda 5th Prapataka). In the worship of Siva this is recited along with Rudram (4th kanda 7th prapataka). This chamakam is a demands-list. Nowhere in the Vedas, can one come across such a long list of demands. Another peculiarity of this piece is, while all other Vedic litanies pray to god for the welfare of all (give us wealth, give us heroic sons and so on), chamakam demands are personal – this to me, that to me etc.

The words cha mey is repeated many times in this prayer. Hence the name chamakam. Cha means ‘and’. Mey means ‘to me’. And food to me, and a good mind to me to give food to others, and purity to me, and delight to me……. Thus goes on the prayer.
It ends with the predicate, ‘may be attained by yagna’ (effort).

It is the eleventh chapter of this litany that we are interested in, as it contains some mathematics. The eleventh chapter begins with a numerical series – Eka cha mey, Thisras cha mey. (And one to me, and three to me and so on.) Thus the series goes on upto 33.

Following this there is another series of numbers, 4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36 40 44 48 (and four to me, and eight to me and so on.)

The numbers are philosophically explained. 1= nature, 3= three Gunas, 5= five elements, 7= Gnanendriyas + mind + intellect, 4= the four aims of life, 8= Vedas and upavedas. The sage who composed this verse has given an explicit list of more than 300 requirements. It is enigmatic as to why he chose to express certain demands through a number puzzle. Moreover, certain concepts like moksham as the final aim of the life, three gunas etc. are not to be found in Samhitas and they are certainly developments of later period. So, one is led to the conclusion that there is something mathematical in these two series.

1) Why odd numbers in one bunch and even nos. in another bunch specifically and separately mentioned.
2) Mentioning of these numbers in this order make any special meaning to raffle ticket rasikas/gamblers?
3) Why this numbering anuvagam is placed in chamakam as the last anuvagam?
4) How to arrive at the meaning of these numbers? Perhaps sky could be the limit for making assumptions for the meaning of these numbers.

கணிதத்தில் இந்தத் தொடர்கள் அரித்மெடிக் ப்ரோக்ரஷன் எனப்படும். இது போன்ற தொடர்களின் கூட்டுத் தொகை காண வேண்டுமானால் அதற்கு ஒரு சுருக்கு வழி உண்டு.

தொடரின் முதல் எண்ணையும் கடைசி எண்ணையும் கூட்டி,
அதை அத்தொடரில் உள்ள எண்களின் எண்ணிக்கையால் பெருக்கி,
இரண்டால் வகுக்க வேண்டும்.

உதாரணமாக, 5 7 9 11 என்ற நான்கு எண் தொடரின் கூட்டுத் தொகை
5+11= 16.
16x4 =64.
64/2 = 32

1 3 5 7.....33 என்ற தொடரில் ஒரு சிறப்பு உள்ளது. இதில் வரும் எல்லா எண்களும் ஒற்றைப் படையாகவே உள்ளன. இந்தத் தொடரின் கூட்டுத் தொகை முன் சொன்ன வழியின்படி
1+33= 34.
34x17= 578.
578/2= 289.

இந்தத் தொடருக்கு மட்டும், அதாவது 1இல் தொடங்கும் ஒற்றைப்படை எண்களின் தொடருக்கு மட்டும் கூட்டுத் தொகை காண மற்றொரு சுருக்கு வழி உள்ளது. தொடரில் எத்தனை எண்கள் இருக்கின்றனவோ அதை வர்க்கப்படுத்தினால் கூட்டுத் தொகை வந்து விடும். 1 3 5 7 9 11 என்ற 6 எண்களின் கூட்டுத் தொகை 6x6= 36.

1 3 5 7 9 11 13 15 17 19 21 23 25 27 29 31 33 என்ற 17 எண்களின் கூட்டுத் தொகை 17x17 =289.

இனி அடுத்த தொடரைப் பார்ப்போம். இது 4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36 40 44 48 என 12 எண்கள் கொண்டது இது. இதில் முதல் இரு எண்களின் கூட்டுத் தொகை தான் மூன்றாவது எண். 2வது 3வது எண்களின் கூட்டுத் தொகை 5 வது எண். 3வது 4வது எண்களின் கூட்டுத்தொகை 7வது எண்ணாக அமைந்துள்ளது. இவ்வாறே மற்றவையும்.

இந்தத் தொடரின் கூட்டுத் தொகையை வழக்கமான சுருக்கு வழியில் போடலாம்.
4+48= 52.
52x12 =624.
624/2=312.
4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36 40 44 48 என்ற தொடரின் கூட்டுத் தொகை 312
These series are called arithmetic progressions. To find the sum of a series of such progressive numbers,
Add the first and last numbers of the series.
Multiply it by the number of the constituents of the series.
Divide it by two.
For example, the sum of a four number series, 5 7 9 11 is
5+11= 16.
16x4 =64.
64/2 = 32

There is another peculiarity in the series -- 1 3 5 7.....33. All its constituents are odd numbers. We will find the sum of this series.
1+33= 34.
34x17= 578.
578/2= 289.

For this particular series, that is a series of odd numbers beginning with 1 there is another method to find the sum. The sum of the series is equal to the square of the number of constituents. The six numbered series 1 3 5 7 9 11 has the sum 6x6= 36.
So the sum of the 17 number series 1 3 5 7 9 11 13 15 17 19 21 23 25 27 29 31 33 is 17x17 =289.

Let us go the next series. It begins with 4 and progresses by 4 at each step. It contains 12 numbers.
4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36 40 44 48.

This series has a peculiarity of its own. Add the first and second numbers, you get the third number. Add the second and third numbers; you get the fifth number and so on. Now let us find the sum of this series.

4+48= 52.
52x12 =624.
624/2=312.
The sum of the series 4 8 12 16 20 24 28 32 36 40 44 48 = 312

இந்த 289 மற்றும் 312 என்ற எண்களில் ஏதேனும் சிறப்பு இருக்குமா என்று தேடுவோம். சமகத்தின் முதல் 10 அனுவாகங்களில் சமே என்ற சொல் 310 முறை பயன்படுத்தப்பட்டிருக்கிறது. இதில் இந்திரனைக் குறித்த ஒரு பகுதியில் 20 முறை இந்திரன் பெயர் மற்ற தேவர்களுடன் சேர்க்கப்பட்டுச் சொல்லப்படுகிறது.

ஸோமனோடு கூடிய இந்திரனும் எனக்கு
ஸவிதாவோடு கூடிய இந்திரனும் எனக்கு
ஸரஸ்வதியோடு கூடிய இந்திரனும் எனக்கு என்று அதை வரிக்கு ஒன்றாக எடுத்துக்கொள்ளலாம்.

இந்த 20ஐயும் இவ்வாறு பொருள் கொண்டால் கோரிக்கையோடு கூடிய மொத்த சமேக்களின் எண்ணிக்கை 290 ஆகும்.

இந்த சமே இல்லாமலும் சில விஷயங்கள் வேண்டப்படுகின்றன. 167வது சமேக்கும் 168வது சமேக்கும் நடுவில், சமே இல்லாமல், பசவ ஆரண்யாச்ச என்ற கோரிக்கை வைக்கப்படுகிறது.
259வது சமேக்கும் 260வது சமேக்கும் நடுவில் சக்வரீ, அங்குலய என்ற இரண்டு பொருட்கள் வேண்டப்படுகின்றன.

சமே இல்லாமல், யக்ஞேன கல்பதாம் என்ற பல்லவியுடன் வரும் கோரிக்கைகள் 10.

ஆயுர் யக்ஞேன கல்பதாம்,
ப்ராணோ யக்ஞேன கல்பதாம்,
அபானோ யக்ஞேன கல்பதாம்,
வ்யானோ யக்ஞேன கல்பதாம்,
சக்ஷுர் யக்ஞேன கல்பதாம் ,
ச்ரோத்ரம் யக்ஞேன கல்பதாம் ,
மனோ யக்ஞேன கல்பதாம்,
வாக் யக்ஞேன கல்பதாம்,
ஆத்மா யக்ஞேன கல்பதாம்,
யக்ஞோ யக்ஞேன கல்பதாம் ஆக 10.

இன்னும் பார்ப்போம். நிறைவுப் பகுதியில் மூச்சுவிடாமல் சொல்லப்படும் ஒரு மந்திரம் உண்டு. இதுவும் கோரிக்கைகள் தாம். வாஜச்ச ப்ரஸவச்ச அபிஜச்ச க்ரதுச்ச ஸுவச்ச மூர்தாச்ச வ்யச்னியச்ச ஆந்த்யாயனச்ச அந்த்யச்ச பௌவனச்ச புவனச்ச அதிபதிச்ச யக்ஞேன கல்பந்தாம் என்று 12 பொருள்கள் வேண்டப்படுகின்றன.

ஆக,
சமே என்ற பல்லவியுடன் வேண்டப்படும் பொருள்கள் 290
சமே இல்லாமல் வேண்டப்படுபவை 3

இந்த 315 இல் சில திரும்பத் திரும்பக் கூறப்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. உதாரணமாக, அக்னி என்பது 3 முறையும், சக்ஷு என்பது 2 முறையும், ப்ராண என்பது 3 முறையும் கூறப்பட்டுள்ளன. அத்தகைய புனருக்திகள் 24ஐ நீக்கிவிட்டால் வேண்டப்படும் பொருள்களின் நிகர எண்ணிக்கை 291

எல்லா எண்ணிக்கைகளையும் தொகுத்துப் பார்ப்போம்.
முதல் 10 அனுவாகத்தில் வரும் சமேக்கள் 310
அதில் இந்திரப் பகுதி நீங்கலாக உள்ள சமேக்கள் 290
கோரப்படும் பொருட்கள் 315
புனருக்திகளை நீக்கிப் பார்த்தால் கோரப்படும் பொருள்களின் எண்ணிக்கை 291

எப்படிப் பார்த்தாலும் இந்த எண்ணிக்கைகள் 289 மற்றும் 312 ஐச் சுற்றிச் சுற்றியே வருகின்றன. இந்த இரு எண் தொடர்களுக்கும் கோரப்படும் பொருள்களின் எண்ணிக்கைக்கும் ஏதேனும் தொடர்பு உண்டா?

Is there any significance in these two sums, 289 and 312 ? The first 10 anuvakas preceding the mathematical one contains the words cha mey 310 times.

There is a section which mentions Indra 20 times in conjunction with various other gods.

1 Agni cha mey + Indra cha mey,
2 Soma cha mey + Indra cha mey,
3 Savita cha mey + Indra cha mey,
4 Saraswati cha mey + Indra cha mey,
…………………..
20 Prajapati cha mey + Indra cha mey,

Though each set contains two cha meys the meaning suggests that they are to be taken as one.

And to me Agni along with Indra,
And to me Soma along with Indra
And to me Savita along with Indra
And to me Saraswati along with Indra.

So these 20 Cha meys can be removed while calculating the effective list of demands.

There are certain demands without this suffix cha mey.
Pasava Aranyas cha between 168th and 169th chameys.
Sakvari and Angulaya between 259th and 260th chameys.

There is another list of 10 demands without cha mey but followed by the burthen yagnena kalpatham.

Ayur yagnena kalpatham
Prano yagnena kalpatham
Apano yagnena kalpatham
Vyano yagnena kalpatham
Chakshur yagnena kalpatham
Srothram yagnena kalpatham
Mano yagnena kalpatham
Vak yagnena kalpatham
Atma yagnena kalpatham
Yagno yagnena kalpatham

The concluding part of the prayer is recited non-stop. This is also a list of 12 demands. Vajas cha prasavas cha Apijas cha krathus cha suvas cha murdha cha vyasniyas cha anthyayanas cha anthyas cha bouvanas cha buvanas cha adhipatis cha yagnena kalpantham.

So, The things prayed for with the words cha mey 290
Without cha mey 3
With yagnena kalpatham 10
The final list 12
Total things prayed for 315


In this list of 315 there are some repetitions. For example Agni is mentioned thrice, chakshu two times and prana three times. If we remove these 24 repetitions the total comes to 291

To summarise,
Number of chameys in the first 10 Anuvakas 310
Number of chameys excluding the indra section 290
Number of demands 315
Number of demands excluding repetition 291

In whatever way we look at, these numbers are close to the numbers 289 and 312. Could there be a connection between these numbers and the contents of the prayer?

when you add 289,we get 19,again when we add 10,ultimately 1.This is advaitham non-duality principle(shiva i am ),for a dwaithi example of ishta devatha can be taken say like lord aditya aka suryan which is what it signifies in numerology,and for visista-advaitha.........so on.

312 when added gives 6.Maha Lakshmi is the significator of Wealth in abundance or the other two devis,namely maha saraswathy or maha parvathy.
