Pongal is the bunch or collection of festivals, which includes Bhogi, pongal, mattu pongal, kaanumpongal. Its celebrated almost every part in India.
Pongal is celebrated as a thanks-giving function to all, though mainly for farmers.

BHOGI: Lord Indra is referred to be "Bhogi". Indra is the god for Rain and Thunder. Also, he is the head for all devas. So, indra is worshipped in this day. People create fire and destroys their old and unwanted belongings in that fire and celebrates Bhogi. This is actually to send-off the "Margazhi" and to get ready for "Thai". Its also said that Margazhi is the month which is considered as "brahma muhurtha" for devas. So, after which is the morning (time to act). Also, indra is the god of wealth and prosperity. To pacify him, older things are destroyed and new ones are used. This day is also taken as a token to destroy (burn) older ill thoughts and get into new thinking.

PONGAL: This day is to worship "Sungod". With the new rice and other fresh vegetables pongal and kootu are prepared. The crop for sun is sugarcane. So, we are offering that also. In the day of pongal, sungod enters into the home of Guru (Makara), which brings a prosperity. Famous Makarajothi in sabarimalai (Kanthamalai) is also important in this day. Atleast in the day of pongal, we people are thinking farmers, and also the other factors which helped him for the yield like sunlight, rain, grains, etc.

MAATU PONGAL: The same kind of celebration with "GOpooja" (Worshipping cow) and also doing "KANU". Kanu pongal is kept in turmeric leaves by women for the welfare of their own siblings (especially brothers). In this day, women wont prepare rasam. Instead, all types of chitrannams, avial, and other side dishes will be prepared. It will be nice to eat than pongal.

Enjoy the bunch of festivals and worship god and eat in his name well.
My favourite Ulundu vadai, Avial, Vazhaikkai will play cheif roles in these functions.... Yummmyyyyyyyy blended with divinity.

Makara Sankaranthi is celebrated all over the country just for one day but only in Tamilnadu it is almost a week long festival.

Nothing will work in Tamilnadu for the next few days as most of the offices are closed for the next four days continuously.

Rural Tamilnadu celebrates pongal much better than cities and towns.

Bogi is creating environmental pollution.

There is no festivity for Mattu Pongal in the City.

All the best

One correction.

'Makara Sankaranthi' is observed in many parts of the country.

In Tamilnadu, it's basically a farmers festival thanking Sun and the Cows and Bulls.

In A.P., Bhogi is celebrated only at homes, by disposing of old, unwanted things and replacing them with newly bought ones. On Pongal, they celebrate it on almost same lines as we do.

In Karnataka, I do not think Pongal is a great festival. But in Kerala, it is celebrated as a 'Harvest Festival' for one day.

In northern parts of the country, it is acknowledged as the end of 'Dakshinayanam' and beginning of 'Uttarayanam'. (Remember, Bhishma in Mahabharatham held his prana, until the arrival of uttarayanam, to leave this world).

On this day, Sun enters 'Makara Rasi' and starts his northward journey.

Festivals and Events
Makara Sankraanti
This festival falls on the 14th of January. On this day, the sun enters the house of Capricorn (or Makara as it is known
Sankranthi.jpg
in the Hindu Almanac), so it is known as Makara Sankranthi. It marks the commencement of the sun's journey to the Northern Hemisphere and is considered to be of great spiritual significance in the scriptures. It is also the time when farmers rejoice after the toils of the year result in a bountiful harvest in the fields, and is celebrated all over the country. Indeed, the harvest festival is common to many cultures all over the world and is an occasion of joyful celebration and warm conviviality. In Prasanthi Nilayam, the festival coincides with the valedictory function of the Annual Sports and Cultural Meet of Bhagawan’s educational institutions, when the prizewinners of the various events and competitions held during the year are felicitated.
Excerpts from Bhagawan’s Discourses:
“Makara Sankranthi marks the movement of the Sun from the southern horizon to the northern horizon. This northward movement of the Sun has immense spiritual significance. The north is symbolised by Himaachala. Hima means snow. It is pure, untainted and soothingly cool. All these endow it with the quality of Prashanthi (perfect peace). Achala means that which is steady and unshakeable. Himaachala does not refer to the physical Himalayan mountains. It represents that which is cool, peaceful and steady. From this day the Sun is said to move towards such a state. The Sun symbolises the vision of man. The northward movement of the Sun is a call to human beings to turn their vision towards that which is cool, peaceful and unchanging, i.e. towards the divinity within.
- Divine Discourse: 14 January, 1994
“Sankranthi day marks the arrival in the farmers' houses of the grains that are the fruit of their labors. It is also a cherished day of rest after a period of hard work when they can enjoy peace of mind. "Samyak kranthi iti Sankraanthi." Sankraanthi confers peace and heralds a welcome change. It brings out the inner joy in people. It effects a change in life-style. It generates sacred thoughts”.
- Divine Discourse: January 14, 1997
Pray wholeheartedly for the welfare of humanity - Loka Samastha Sukhino Bhavantu (May all the people of the world be happy). You can be happy only when the world is happy. There is an intimate and inseparable relationship between you and the world. Chant the Divine Name. Pray for the welfare of the world and participate in service activities”.
- Divine discourse: January 14, 2002
“The Sankranthi festival should be regarded as the day on which man turns his vision toward God. Man's life may be compared to a stalk of sugar cane. Like the cane, which is hard and has many knots, life is full of difficulties. But these difficulties have to be overcome to enjoy the bliss of the Divine, just as the sugar cane has to be crushed and its juice converted into jaggery to enjoy the permanent sweetness of jaggery. Enduring bliss can be obtained only by overcoming trials and tribulations. Gold cannot be made into an attractive jewel without subjecting to the process of melting in a crucible and beating it into the required shape”.
- Divine Discourse: January 15, 1992
