Nest announces the “Works with Nest” Program to make your Home even more Smart and Connected

June 24, 2014 amazingtechie

Nest, a pioneer in home automation products,(A Google Company) has kick started the “Work With Nest” program which enables 3rd Party Manufacturers to integrate with Nest. It enables developers to write software programs that will integrate appliances, devices and automobiles with Nest Products for a connected and Intelligent Home .

A set of prebuilt API for connecting some common consumer brands with the Nest platform has already been developed . These consumer brands include biggies like Mercedes and then there is IFTTT (If This Then That), enabling you to set responses when a certain events happen.

The Nest Protect Smoke and CO alarms which has been tied up with Australian firm Lifx, which turns all the bulbs red in case it detects smoke inside the home, which could be useful for the deaf, who can’t hear alarms.

For example, Nest Devices will be well-integrated with the Jawbone UP24. which is a popular fitness tracker with the ability to detect sleep patterns. The Jawbone may be used to sense whether you are asleep or not and the Nest in turn uses the information to adjust the temperature accordingly.

The Mercedes Integration enables the Car to automatically notify the ETA (Expected time of Arrival) to Nest to conveniently switch on the cooling / heating system before you arrive.

The Nest platform has also been integrated with Whirlpool. The thermostat notifies the Whirlpool Washing Machine in case you are away so that system switches to a “Refresh” mode which will keep the clothes wrinkle free.

Logitech’s Harmony Ultimate Remote also supports the Nest Learning thermostat and so you can control your Nest with it.

Another integration of the Nest platform with Chamberlain MyQ has been announced which will empower customers to monitor and control their garage doors from anywhere. When the garage door is closed when you leave your home, the intelligent thermostat will go into “Away” mode resulting in energy savings.

Of Course, handing over the keys for the control of your home to an electronic device vulnerable to hacking is no doubt a scary proposition and Nest is prepared for it by having certain safety guards . For example, all data is encrypted with SSL and uses secure OAuth 2.0 Tokens.

One can revoke a device’s relationship with Nest at any time. Also, only basic parameters are shared between devices, nothing more.

While all this gives off a futuristic vibe, Nest has gone ahead and done something even more awesome: Google Now Integration, which is coming later this year.

The Developer Program is garnering quite a bit of interest with 5000 developers already evincing interest in the program and the “Home on your Phone” tag line will give a major impetus to the Nest ecosystem. We should expect the war to intensify among the competing brands with Apple already introducing its own Homekit Platform and rumors of Google introducing its own Home Automation Platform already shaking up the landscape.

One thing is for sure, the Internet of Things is the future, with devices like Nest integrating with other “Smart” devices for a connected web and a truly Smart Home.
