Google Glass is a great device, but it’s asking price, $1500, is set too high.

While the opportunity for buying Glass has closed, even if Glass was open for sale, not many would buy it. Only developers and people who are filthy rich will buy it.

A site called Teardown.com set out to find out whether Google Glass really costs $1500 to make. It got an answer. And boy, what an answer it was!

After examining and estimating the cost of Glass components, Teardown.com came to the conclusion that Glass costs only $80 to make, give or take.

Yeah, you heard that right. But that price is estimated, so the real cost may be lower or higher.

However, the cost of components doesn’t alone go into the price of a product. Research and Development costs too add up to the final cost.

Plus, the model that Google is selling is the Developer Edition and all developer versions of products are usually higher than the consumer versions of the same products.

Google has said to the WSJ that the estimated price is significantly lower than Glass’ actual price. However. it can’t be that lower, right?

Even after taking the above factors into consideration, the cost of making Google Glass is most likely lower than the price that Google sells it at.
