[h=1]This palm sized portable printer runs across paper, printing along the way[/h]

A new interesting Kickstarter project has emerged and it actually is pretty innovative. You can’t carry around a printer everywhere and true portable printers print in miniscule sizes.

The Mini Mobile Robotic Printer changes all that. It basically is a palm sized printer that moves across the page, laying down ink along the way. The concept itself is such that any printer, no matter it’s size, can theoretically print papers that are larger than the printer itself and the only factor that will change is time.

“We looked at printers today, and we saw big bulky boxes with the printhead inside moving from left to right,” said Zuta Labs designer Jonathan Stein in the video about the project posted on Kickstarter. “Then we thought, ‘Why not just take the printer out, and put it on a robot?’”

While you won’t see anyone using it in their homes, as it wouldn’t be practical, it sure is a boon for practitioners of ‘Mobile Office’, i.e basically a portable office. It could work in a pinch when you are out and about.

However, there are some factors to be concerned about. While it is easy to position, you must make sure that it is at the top left of the page, else whatever you are printing will just look…Haphazard.

Plus, you need to find a steady, stable and flat surface for the printer to move around, else parts of your document will be incomprehensible and if the surface is moving, the entire document will be illegible and then there is the danger of the printer falling off.

It , according to it’s creators, Zapa Labs, has an efficiency of about 1000 pages from a cartridge, but that number only applies if every single one of those pages is printed in black and white, no fancy colors, nothing.

It would be slower than traditional printers naturally, because it actually has to move across the page, rather than printers which lay ink on paper faster, as the printer itself doesn’t have to move. It will move across the page using an omnidirectional wheel system and will print at a speed of only about 1.2 pages per minute. But hey, you got a palm sized printer that can actually print text of legible size, so who’s complaining?

It has a Lithium Polymer battery (Of course, else how will it be considered portable) which will last for 1 hour of printing. It will charge through a micro-USB cable and can charge up through your computer’s USB port.
Documents will be beamed up to the printer by syncing ( via Bluetooth) with a computer. Android and iOS apps are planned for a later release
.

It currently is in prototype stage and the creators have put the project on crowdfunding site, Kickstarter with an end goal of $400,000. You can donate too and you will get one (Preorder) if you donate $180. After the Kickstarter campaign, the price goes to upto $200, so it would be wise to grab one of these little marvels.

It can be expected that this will achieve it’s goal, as these kind of things are kind of in demand (Road warriors, Mobile Office practioners, anyone who needs a quick print out on the road).

The prototype has a print quality of 96×192 dpi, which leaves a bit to be desired, but it is still a prototype and it’s creators have promised that the quality will improve IF the printer reaches it’s crowdfunding goal.

And finally, if this little innovative printer reaches it’s goal, it’s creators have hinted at the early January of 2015 for starting shipments of the Mini Mobile Robotic Printer.
