Facebook had announced Internet.org last year which had the ultimate aim of bringing internet to the 2/3 parts of the world that are offline.Facebook had already signed up companies like Samsung, Nokia and NASA to help achieve it’s goal.

What Facebook didn’t explain was how it was gonna go about it.

Now, Facebook has revealed it’s grand plan to bring internet to everyone. And it involves drones. And lasers. Already sounds awesome, doesn’t it?

Mark Zuckerburg wants to beam internet (Reminds us of a famous quote, what was it?) to the world. Using a combination of satellites, drones and lasers, Facebook will deliver internet to the world and bring 2/3rds of the world to the modern age.

Those drones will fly at an height of 20,000 metres which is above commercial airspace and away from potential disruptions such as winds and bad weather. These drones will deploy and will fly for upto one month before coming down. In areas with low population, low orbit geosynchronous satellites will be used.

Facebook has acquired Ascenta, a startup which has made certain achievements such as the longest flying solar powered drone (Zephyr) and they were also responsible for projects such as the Breitling Orbiter.

They will work with Facebook and will help in developing the high endurance solar powered drones.

Facebook’s acquisition is just another part of the grand fabric that Facebook is laying out which ultimately will bring internet to the world.

They are mainly developing a technology called Free-Space Optical (FSO) communication which revolves around the idea of sending data between the drones and the ground with the help of invisible infrared lasers. Once developed, the technology can offer speeds that can match with the current fibre-optic speeds.

Google too has been working on a similar program to bring internet to all but instead of drones, satellites and lasers, the Google project involves the use of balloons.

With giants such as Facebook and Google tackling the problem of affordable internet connectivity head-on, the promise for a completely connected, learned and developed world now seems more real.
