Here is an official description of the tech behind it:

The Boeing Black phone is manufactured as a sealed device both with epoxy around the casing and with screws, the heads of which are covered with tamper proof covering to identify attempted disassembly. Any attempt to break open the casing of the device would trigger functions that would delete the data and software contained within the device and make the device inoperable.

Wow. The device’s specs are mediocre, at best: 4.3 inch Qhd ( 960*540 ) display, 1.2 Ghz dual core Cortex-A9 processor ( Current Gen : Cortex A-15) and a secure version of Google Android.

It will weigh 170 gms.

What is interesting about the device is it’s modular design : You can add biometric scanners, sattelite transievers, solar chargers and other accessories through it’s expandable back panel.

It will be made in the US. And if anyone tries to open the phone and/or tamper with it, it will automatically delete all software and data rendering the device useless.

But it won’t be released to the consumer market, unfortunately. It will be “sold primarily to government agencies and companies engaged in contractual activities with those agencies that are related to defense and homeland security,” the letter ( FCC filing ) says.

A Boeing executive says that the “Black” will be priced lower than other such secure devices in the arena which cost around $15000 – $20000. A known player in this market is Blackberry which has long been the Govt’s preferred secure phone manufacturer.

Oh well, guess we will have to do with the still-secure-but-not-self-destructing similarly named Blackphone .
