Eat Right, Feel Good

The age old saying "you are what you eat" could not be truer when it comes to eating to look and be healthy. Being the strongest argument for natural beauty, the philosophy behind it is actually quite basic. A nutrient-rich, healthy diet calls for just a few simple, healthy changes in the way you eat. Food affects all the cells in your body and every aspect of our being: our mood, energy levels, food cravings, thinking capacity, sex drive, and sleep patterns. If you feed your body junk food, it'll show, and no fancy creams can hide the damage. There are 5 ground rules you need to follow if you want to go down the healthy path.

The 5 rules:

Going Local

Supermarkets are the graveyard of vegetables. Pre-packaged and pre-weighed produce are in transit or cold storage for days or weeks during which their nutritional value declines considerably. This also affects the taste of your food. It's better to get them from the sabziwaala who patrols his cart in your neighbourhood! Chances are he'll have fresher and healthier food. Going local will automatically mean that you're eating seasonal produce.

The benefits of eating what's in season are manifold. Gourds and pumpkins, which are high in water content, replenish all the water you are losing through the sweltering months in the summer. A rich array of cauliflowers, carrots, broccoli, and beans keep you warm in cold winter months.

Traditional Foods

Going traditional means staying away from modern-day high-stress foods, like artificial sweeteners, added sugars, butter, dairy, high-fructose corn syrup, transfats, beverages loaded with caffeine and other additives, and packaged meats. Traditional nutrition was always centered on whole grains, vegetables, beans, fish, organic meat, organic diary, nuts, seed and fruit. The standard Indian diet of dals, vegetables and roti is very healthy and works well in the Indian scenario.

Cooking Styles

So you eat seasonal vegetables and fruits only. But did you know that the same concept can be applied to cooking styles as well? When combined intelligently like yin and yang, food and cooking styles have their own energy and thereby the power to influence your energy. For example, stronger cooking styles like pickling, barbecuing, grilling, and baking are more yang, as they produce an inward energy and warm you up. They should therefore be used judiciously during the summer months.

If the above styles are used during the summer, they should ideally be counteracted with the more yin styles like steaming, boiling, and saute for a balanced meal. On the other hand, in the monsoon months, stewing and slow cooking are best coupled with slightly stronger methods like grilling or pressure cooking, which will give you warm inward energy.

Eating Correctly

When you eat unhealthy or skip meals, the body feels threatened by the way you are treat it. Its defence mechanism hangs onto the fat in your body, slowing down your metabolism, which causes ailments in the long run. You need to eat in peace, which means: No talking on the phone, no watching TV, no distraction. Find a spot to sit and eat your food like we were meant to. The more organised you are in your eating habits, the more likely it is that you will be in control of your weight and health.

Variations

Meal times are not just about eating but eating intelligently so as to be nourished. If you eat the same food day in and day out, your body gets used to it and becomes dull. The goal is to use a variety of cooking styles, ingredients, and foods. This increases the ability of the body to absorb the various nutrients and affect your state of mind and moods. Just as your brain becomes dull if you keep doing the same work for long periods of time, a new flavour or taste is a treat for your body, which wakes up to understand and assimilate this new element.
