"Madhura Gitavani" N.C.Vasanthakokilam. (1919-1951)

She lived for just 32 years. Within that young age she reached to excellence in carnatic music and considered one among the female triumvirate of Carnatic Music at that time with M S Subbulakshmi and D K Pattammal. She enchanted the music lovers with her high octave silken voice which she could control with effortless ease. NCV brought the songs of Yogi Suddhananda Bharati to the music lovers. She sang quite a number of Tamil songs in her concerts . She was a regular in the the annual conerts of Tamil Isai Sangam and Indian Fine Arts Society. She had also acted in a few (seven or eight)movies, including famous "Haridas" with MK Tyagaraja Bagavathar.

"The Hindu" carried an article on their Friday Review November,28, 2008, on this great musician by Sriram Venkatkrishnan:

The Hindu : Friday Review Chennai / Columns : Flight of a nightingale

Here is a beautiful song by "Andavan Pichai" rendered by N C Vasanthakokilam that I like much:

My sincere thanks to our member Sri "Kahanam" for referring the name of "Andavan Pichai" (Mathu Sri Maragathammal) in his post #38/30.12.2010- Song on gomathi devi.

NCV,

Would have challenged MS's pre eminent position as the queen of Carnatic music had she lived. Love her voice as recorded in those old Bakelite plates, which did absolutely no justice to the vocal gift within. Such is life!

Dear Sri Kunjuppu,

You said it. NCV with her popularty growing fast, was a challenge to many leading lady vocalists of her time. But her ill fate would be, she was snached away from the scene of Carnatic music at that young age. Many people may not be aware that she had left all her earnings to charitable pupose. I wonder why this great artist is not given her place in Carnatic Music of past when we talk about great artists?
