Brahmanyan,

tamilzh thaatha has no takers in today's tamil nadu. however you may define him - as a founder of modern tamil, discoverer of ancient sangam scriptures, language reformist etc.

what people would br broadcast is the fact that UVS refused to teach tamil to a dalit (or mid caste I am not sure) child. which i read a while back, in one of the comments about him in a blog.

that he was a brahmin does not help either.

maybe in another 100 years he would get his due. or in these days, even when the founders of the dravidian movement are only paid lip service, UVS could join the list of greats, removed from memory and consigned to yet another chapter of history.

.. all we can hope is, the active presence of UVS clubs, much like bharathi clubs, which constantly hold functions like oratory contest, poetry reading and such, and keep burning bharathiar's candle, however dimly it might be. but the the maha kavi, cut across caste, and that too a deliberately.

in private life UVS was a man of his times - a staunch brahmin, who would hobnob with the other upper castes like pillais and mudaliars, and would virtually ignore if not stay away from the rest of tamil hindus.

Dear Kunjuppu,

That appears to be a very unfair comment. A society can not forget completely the path and the distance it has covered in its journey. Those were times when only the brahmins, Pillais, Mudalis were interested in learning anything. UVS not taking a student into his care was just a routine matter. To read casteist hatred into it is pure prejudice. UVS studied under a Pillai. Please do not trivialise UVS's contribution to Tamil language. For his times what he did was great. At a time when there were no research grants, he spent his time and money going to distant places looking for palm leaf manuscripts. At a time when there were no hygienic hotels in wherever he went he managed with what was offered in brahmin's houses(those were not sumptuous five course King's meals either) in those villages that he visited and pursued his goal with single minded devotion. That kind of people you do not get every now and then in our society.
If you know Tamil, if you enjoy Tamil literature, you can never forget UVS and you would be ever thankful to him.

Cheers.

Any references for such claims! Even his teacher, Meenakshi sundaram pillai was very selective in accepting students; even UVS Iyer was not sure of becoming his student.

dear raju,

i was very surprised, to put it mildly, at the way my post was interpreted. i mean this in a very gentle way, as your response is more in line with a harsh criticism (maybe) of UVS.

My post was meant to be a wry, matter of fact, and somewhat disappointing publicity and awareness of UVS, given these times. Based largely on the poiitics of the day and nothing to do with his achievements.

I have no way criticised or mocked UVS for his achievements. that would be like an ass braying on chewing kamban's ramayana. hopefully i have not gone down on that path, or appear to do so.

all i said, on a personal level, UVS, was a man of his times, with the morals of the day. i have read somewhere, in one of the dalit blogs, which i have not been able to locate on a quick search, about UVS turning away a low caste student, as defined in those times. had he taken on the student, he would have risen above his community standards of those times, for after all the young man was only seeking education, and UVS had several students. that is all and no more.

furthermore i compared him to bharathi, in the efforts to maintain his memory. fortunately for bharathi, he has a following of young tamils, across caste lines and they have kept alive his flame.

i have regretted that nothing such is being done for UVS. today's youth may be unable to relate to him, but the tamil scholars would do so. with the dravidian revolution, any tendency to even put up a statue for him, did not happen, i think, only because of his caste.

in the 1968 world tamil confernece, i would have thought, more than most of the others, UVS was warranted a statue in a place of honour. but even with CNA, who i think was able on occassions to rise above narrow casteism, did not consider it important to honour UVS. much akin to kamban being ignored by MK during the recent event at kovai.

hopefully, my posting was a wry comment on the influence of today's politics, and its inability to recognize service to tamil, which this, week is being, once again celebrated as a semmozhi. all this would have been impossible without the significant contribution of UVS.

this was meant to be the context of my earlier post.

that this attitude exists even today. just in another thread, 'ideas ideas', raji ram, has mentioned, about the crass prejudice she was presented with, when she opted to go to a non brahmin household to have a good view of the temple function and take a few pictures. sad, but true.

Dear Kunjuppu,

Every time some one shouts 'casteism', pointing the finger at some innocuous personal preferences (which every one, dalit included, is eligible to have as a matter of right) of people who are gentlemen, I get upset and my post is a response which came out of that sensititvity. No hard feelings please. You have rued :

I suggest that you visit Chennai and walk along the beautiful marina beach. You will find UVS statue there in a prominent place inside the Madras University Campus. It looks as if UVS is still teaching with all those statues on the opposite side of the beach road Kamban, GUPope etc., standing with respect and himself facing them. Of course JJ thought a fiery looking Kannagi can not be a disciplined student and so perhaps removed her from the class.

Cheers.

Dear SRi Kunjuppu,

"என் சரித்திரம்" is not only an autobiography, but a book on social life of Tamil Nadu in the times of Dr UVS. Interestingly where ever UVS went he was accorded the respect due to a Tamil Scholar and Brahmin. There is no mention of caste differences hampering his work in the book. In fact Maha Sannithanam and other non-brahmins who patronised him took care that he was able to perform his religious duties as a Brahmin without hindrance. I understood there was respect for Brahmins in the days of UVS even though they were conservative.

Regards,
Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

Sri Kunjuppu's penchant for searching anti-brahmin postings in dravidian and virulent anti-brahmin blogs and websites and cross posting the selected ones in this forum is quite well known. He would have us believe that the whole world functions as blogged in such internet forums.

But the truth many a times is completely different. Here is the link for the article about tamizh thatha in today's Hindu to commemorate tamizh thatha's birth anniversary falling tomorrow:

The Hindu : FEATURES / METRO PLUS : Thamizh Thatha

Contrary to the fear (or is it hope?) that the memory of Sri U.Ve.Sa. will be obliterated, the following is the excerpt from his birthday celebration reports of 2011:

"The State government has been converting houses of great Tamil scholars into memorials and nationalising their works. U.Ve.Sa's house at Uthamadhanapuram was renovated at a cost of Rs. 23 lakh and declared open for public use on April 27, 2008. A library is functioning in the house with books written by the scholar. College and school students also garlanded the bust of U. Ve. Sa. V. Anbarasan, Chairman of Valangaiman panchayat union, Kokila Muthamizhselvi, and president of Uthamadhanapuram panchayat participated in the function."

Dear Brahmanyan

you said:

And Kunjuppu said the same when he mentioned:

UVS was a man of his times - a staunch brahmin, who would hobnob with the other upper castes like pillais and mudaliars,

for, the Guru Mahasannidhanam was also a Pillai. In fact all the mahasannidhanams and thambirans of the saivite mutts are Pillais only. Nithy, a Mudaliyar, tried to break that age old unwritten code and he is in deep trouble. For this very reason it is insignificant and need not be highlighted. Rather I would like to highlight the fact that the standards applied by the Teachers for taking some one as a student were stringent those days and caste never was reckoned as one among them. Meenakshisundaram Pillai who accepted students for teaching tamil also subjected them to such tests. It was something like the CAT today. If a dalit student does not clear CAT today he can not claim that he was rejected on the basis of caste. Every one knows that he was rejected because he could not meet even the relaxed entry norms.

Cheers.

i think i was misunderstood on both of my notes. doesn't matter.

here is what i was trying to say..that UVS is a victim of today's politics. and hopefully in another 100 years, we would have matured enough as a society, to give UVS the exposure to the next generation, and due publicity. that is all and no more.

i am not exonerating MK either. if DMK did something, ADMK undoes it. and vice versa. and even good deeds get crucified by this narrow minded politics.
