Thyagaraja aradhanai special ! why is the pancharatna kritis so special?

Status
Not open for further replies.
Much will be written eulogizing the pancharatna kritis a.k.a ghanaraaga pancharatna kritis. But in the Tiruvaiyaru aradhanai I feel what we get is "pincha"ratnams and not pancharatnams. If Thyagaraja were to come alive today, he may even commit suicide by jumping into the Kaveri, I feel.

As I know these are preferred by the saint himself when asked for his favourite ragas/kritis, and hence they are sung as tribute to his memory. As for their technical finesse await experts opinion.

Paying tribute to Thyagaraja by many singers (they may be amateurs also) is very
laudable. The tradition is still kept today too. Even in Secunderabad, where we
live, Thyagaraja Aradhana is done with all the sincerity and devotion.

Praying tribute to Thyagaraja is nice. But doing so by way of such cacophony is a real disrespect, I feel. Instead they should select, preferably by lucky draw in front of the saint's idol in Tiruvaiyaru, four or five singers and these people, shedding their professional egos, practice rigorously for one or two weeks under the guidance of the senior-most among those five people and render the Pancharatna kritis. The rest of the audience should observe some restraint and calmy listen. This will make it a real tribute.

As to the amateurs and the very many other artistes, let them sing for short periods as they do even now.

On 30th. Jan. or so, SVBC aired in its Nadaneerajanam programme, a tribute to Thyagaraj by some students of a music college. That was real tribute, imho and not the noise created in Thiruvaiyaru.

Dear Sandhya,

Sorry, I missed this thread! The gana rAgam is the one in which 'thAnam' sounds very nice. The five rAgams in which the

pancharathna krithis are set are all gana rAgams. 'naa gow aa va sri' is the formula to remember the five rAgams. :)

Since the charaNam part of these krithis are set as 'swara - sAhithyam', it is better for group singing. Hence these five are

rendered as a homage to Saint Thyagaraja on his ArAthanai day. But the problems which arise when hundreds of artists sing

together are these:

1. Male voices have pitch around 1 kattai and female voices have pitch around 5 kattai. So if a male sings in 1 kattai pitch

the females can't sing so low and hence should choose the next octave base which is 8! Hence they fix something like 7 and

males finds to sing low notes and females the higher notes!

Suggestion: Males can render first third and the fifth and females can render 2 and 4 of the five krithis in the comfortable pitch.

2. The pallavi and anupallavi sangathis vary according to the school in which the artist learns. So a lot of confusion arises.

Suggestion: The sangathis could be standardized for this occasion, circulating the printed notes to the participants.

........... kadri is playing sri, not sure about the accomp in this interesting fusion, not bad
Sri rAgam does not have much gamakams and so the fusion is not much of a confusion. But the charaNam part is full of nice jathi

oriented phrases and the percussion has to give the similar jathis as support. It seems monotonous with the same 'thatha
thaka dhimi' played on the drums throughout the song!! :drum:

P.S: The song is incomplete!!

I forgot to mention this. Behind my Guru we find little Sowmya and Vanathi, the youngest daughter of my Guru. :ranger:

I will probably take a day or 2 to edit this one so i can practice on my violin

Singing of pancharatna krithis - the practice was evolved after the lifetime of saint Thyagaraja. This is what I understand from the people dedicated to Carnatic music............
Dear Sir,

The homage started only after the the lifetime of the Saint.

I have given the reasons for selecting these five for group singing, in post #6.

Dear S S Sir,

GamagakriyA (not priyA) is same as PoorvikalyANi. 'Meenakshi mE mudham dhEhi' is the popular song.

It is the janya rAgam of Gamanashrama which is the 53rd rAgam in the mELa chakram and has swarams

S R1 G3 M2 P D2 N3 S'

GamagakriyA does not have nishAdham in its ArOhaNam.

ArohaNam: S R1 G3 M2 P D2 P S' and avarOhaNam: S' N3 D2 P M2 G3 R1 S

PanthuvarALi also has the name KAmavardhini which is the 51st rAgam in the mELa chakram.

S R1 G3 M2 P D1 N3 S' are the swarams.

So, D1 for PanthuvarALi and D2 for GamagakriyA is the main difference.

Till the Dha is sung, both rAgams will appear similar. :)

Dear Sandhya,

When I was browsing the net, I found this page by Sri. Shivkumar.

Endaro

It seems you have copy pasted from this in our forum. (post # 11)

When we copy past some existing page, it is better to give the source too! :)
