Dear all

In the very first sloka itself, we can find the similarities between LS and this. The word starting with "Sinduraruna vigraham" and here as "Udhikindra sengadhir". Also in this single sloka itself battar refers that devi has been worshipped by both lakshmi and saraswathi (Unarvudoyor adikkindra manickam refers to saraswathi), (Malar kamalai thudhikindra refers to lakshmi). Similarly the word "Madhulam podhu" refers to the petal of "Madhulam flower"; but it also gives meaning that "Maadhu+ulam" (heart of an lady) (The heart of a lady will be filled with lakhs and lakhs of colours which changes always and bright and colourful). If we take the second meaning, it shows us that the colour of devi is also like that which cannot be defined like that of a lady's heart.

In ways of yoga, ambal is in teh colour of rising sun in the chakra mooladhara. When the yogis rise her upwards (Unarvudoyor madikkindra), she turns into the colour of manickam and enters into the next chakra. When she enters into the hrudhayakamala, she takes the colour of lightning. In this same colour she is passing manipooraka to anaghadha chakra (In Manipporaga chakra, the name itself of ambal is "Minnal mohini". When enters in visuddhi she mingles with swami and hence the colour of kunguma. Shiva will be in pure white and ambal will be pure red. In the combined thejas all the other colours are getting dimmed. In this same way, she stood in ajna chakra as mingled form, where we should think of her as fully lightened in the combo of soorya, chandra and agni. So only in this song bhattar refers like these all colours.

Also we should note that all the things mentioned here as "mangala vasthus" (Things of high quality and status), which means that the thejas of devi remains in all the high quality things (indirectly in the minds of high quality people).

When we want to get something done by a person, what we will do in the initial stage? we will analyse whether the person is able to do that. Then only we will reach the person and convey our wish. So only in the introductory song itself, bhattar conveys all the high qualities of ambal and also her proud that she is even worshipped by both lakshmi and saraswathi.

Pranams

The similarities among Lalitha Sahasranaamam, Soundarya Lahari and Abhirami Anthaathi evoke great wonder. However the authors Lord Hayagriva, Adi Sankara Bhagavathpaaada and Abhirami Bhattar all individually being great Devi Upaasakaas in their own way, have given us these great religious treasures for Paaraayanam. Many thanks to Mrs. Visalakshi Ramani for presenting Abhirami anthaathi with meaning!

dear Mr.Kahanam,

All the three great works mentioned by you are about One and the same Devi.

No wonder they are very much alike.

My father always used to utter"Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswathi' in that order.

As a child I used to wonder why not the names of other Gods line VinAyakA,

MurugA and VisnU.

But it is always the mother who is moved to compassion very fast and the father

invariably follows her.

I always cry when I sing Abhirami Anthaathi, when I reach the slokaas # 80+

because of the deep meanings hidden in them.

thank you for your feedback!

with warm regards,
V.R.

Pujyashri Visalakshmi mam,

Pranams

I am not a regular visitor nowadays as am unable to access the site from my workplace. That is the only reason. I also thought that it would become an interruption among your posts and flow and may also makes the reader to confuse. But now decided mam, will follow your posts and write some meanings of my knowledge as I am doing a research in this abirami andhadhi meanings. Please dont mistake me as I interrupts often in this similar thread itself. Thanks a lot. I dont have facility to type in even google transliteration as I lack the keyfonts. So will post in english only...

2. In the first song, bhattar has just introduced us the name only as "ABIRAMI". In this second song, he gives some more intro about her to us. In this song the order goes like this "Thunai, Deivam, Petra thaai". God is superior than friend. We can think the order of "Maatha, pitha, guru and god" and also think that the order in this song is of a wrong kind. But why it has been said like this. A friend is just a friend. A god is also like that only. But the mother (that too specifically "Petra thaai") is a good friend and also god for the child and she turns like that according to the scenario, which she finds just by looking the face of her child. She is the one whom should be worshipped by the child in all the circumstances. Only she should be all for the child. So only, bhattar gave importance to the mother and also introduces Abirami as our mother.

She herself is the vedas. She is the branches and roots of vedas. Why is this info mixed here when stating her as mother? This is actually to explain us that Veda is also our mother "VEDHA MAATHA", who protects us from adharma. She is noother than our ambal who is filled with compassion.

Ok. When we wants to introduce someone, how we will introduce? we will praise his talents, his capabilities, his wealth, etc. But what actually the people infront of them looks for. They will see only the looks of the person. If bhattar introduces ambal as "Bhairavi, panjami, Vanjar uyiravi unnum uyar chandi kali" like this, will we accept??? So, he introduces us ambal as if she is standing infront of us. She has been mentioned as "thripura sundari" holding sugarcane and 5 flower arrows.

See again the wordings of bhattar. When introducing about the person, we should not get afraid of him. If he simply states that she is holding bow and arrows, our human mind will not accept her as mother. So he insists them as "Poonganai" (Floral arrows"). Even that is also not enough. Again he states that "Pani malar poonganai" (Floral arrows dipped in ice).

Where is she? She is actually in Kailash. A mountain filled with ice glaciers. In ice, the flowers will not get faded. But we should also know that in Ice, flowers won't enlarge (Even in our house, we can watch during the season of dec-jan, the amount of flowers will be reduced and the size will also be small. They all remain as "MOKKU"). But here bhattar states that she is having 5 flowers dipped with ice. This shows the grace of ambal. Even the paasangusam also he mentions that as "Men paasangusam". We all should initially know that they are not actually weapons to destroy.

5 arrows- Our 5 indriyas
Sugarcane bow- Ou mind
Paasam- Ragam
Angusam- Krodha dvesha

She has conquered all these silly things and hold them in her hands to protect us.

Pranams

3. "Arinden"

After the formal introduction, bhattar says that he has found the total knowledge of all the shrutis (vedas). A word which he use here must be noted (Evarum ariyaa maraiyai), it means noone has known that in proper terms. Infact vedas are perfectly called as "Marai" in tamil (meaning not directly visible, detectable, understandable, etc.). But bhattar here says that he has found that knowledge too. How he obtained that? In the next verses he said that also. By keeping his head on the holyfeets of devi and also by avoiding the persons who does not know about the mother filled with grace. In this song, he called devi as "Thiruve". It means her feets are the lakshmi and saraswathi (he got the complete knowledge and also he said amba as thiruve"). He also concludes that he was even afraid of the persons who re not the devotees of divine mother as their freindship will lead to the hell for him.

What indirectly is the message conveyed in this song? You may get the ocean of knowledge and wealth. But without the friendship of true devotees (sathsang), you cannot reach higher position. Infact if you act against this, what bhattar mentioned in this song only will happen.

One more thing to note is, bhattar clearly said that he has obtained all the knowledge. But after that what he is telling. (Serindhen- which means he just get clarified). What he gets clarified? That is the divine mother is the only goddess and she is the vedic mother. She is the knowledge and wealth. She has to be worshipped. Only with the true devotees you should mingle all these details he gets clarified after obtaining the clear knowledge.

Pranams

"Manidharum Devarum"

In this song, bhattar gives the order of Humans, devas and

sages. Why these sages comes after the devas? This is mainly

the order of knowledge. Humans are having least knowledge

than devas and sages are having more knowledge than devas.

Sometimes sages are considered even equal to god. Also

whenever we thinks of devi, we should think of some sages too

(Hayagreevar, Agasthyar, Lobamudhra devi, Maarkandeyar,

etc.). So they are considered to be superior than devas and

normal humans. All of them are worshipping the feets of devi.

Here bhattar teaches us "how to worship the god?". (Kuni

tharum), you have to bend so that your head should touch the

feets of god (Shashtanga). Like that only even the great

people like sages are worshipping the feets of amba. The word

"komalam" means lotus and gold. Here both these meanings are

applicable. In this song, the line "komalame kondrai vaar

sadai mel" gives us two different meanings.

1. "kunitharum sevadi komalame kondrai vaar sadai mel"

Without breaking when taking this sentence, it means that

even lord shiva is holding the holy feets of amba, which is

always worshipped by sages, devas and humans.

2. If we break that to, Kunitharum sevadi komalame, and then

kondrai vaar sadai mel, the usual meaning comes.

I consider personally this as an important song, because in

this song the prabhava of swami has been hiddenly said more

than that of ambal. Let we see that also.

Bhattar has not frankly said that you come with your husband.

He has stressed some more points about swami too. When saying

about devi, he has praised the feets of devi (thiruvadi).

When saying about shiva, he has praised about his head

(thirumudi). Usually, when we are praising a female goddess

we praise them as "Kesaadhi paadhandha varnanai" (starting

from head to leg) and vice-versa for male deities. We can see

that in soundarya lahari also. But here bhattar goes in the

opposite manner. It means, he has clearly established that

there is no difference at all between swami and ambal. We

should never consider them as two separate deities. Wherever

he finds place, he confirms his statement that he is badly in

need of grace of both swami and ambal.

One main point to note here which says the grace of swami

even a step above ambal is "Everyone are worshipping the

lotus feet of ambal". BUt, Moon , ganges, kondrai flower and

snake are all there residing in the head of shri parameswara.

It means all of their legs are there in the heads of swami.

This shows how simple swami is and how much grace he gives is

devotees. He is even ready to take them in his head and show

a step higher than him.

Also the word "pani tharum". Shiva-shakthi are residing in

kailash only. (Ice mountain). Whether moon got the ice from

there or because of the presence of moon, the place got ice?

It is mainly because of the grace of swami, chandra is

providing ice.

Observe the controversies shown in this song and the

capability of swami:

See chandran is showering ice and infront of that everything

will be turned to ice. But,ganges is also there in the same

place. She is running from there. In presence of cold

weather, water will become ice and stagnant and will not run.

But, here both are doing their jobs irrespective of the

environment. How is it possible? It is because of the grace

of swami.

Also note that snake is the enemy of moon. (Snake kethu will

engulp moon during chandra grahana according to myth). But

here moon is also free and snake is also quiet.

Swami is controlling all these bedhabedhams (differences).

Usage of words by bhattar is like nectar. Check with the word

"padaitha". It means "having" or "created". Here also, both

these meanings are applicable. Only god has created ganges and moon and they are residing in his head itself.

Finally bhattar is requesting devi that she should come along with her such a nice divine husband and reside in his mind forever.

Dear Mr. Durgadasan,

Thanks a million for the detailed explanation of the AbhirAmi anthAthi slOkAs.

I will summarize the valiant points and preserve for my future use.

May God bless you with everything good in life!

with warm regards and best wishes,
