Today is ‪#‎WorldNoTobaccoDay‬

This is observed around the world every year on May 31. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe.

The day is further intended to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and to negative health effects, which currently lead to nearly 6 million deaths each year worldwide, including 600,000 of which are the result of non-smokers being
exposed to second-hand smoke.

[h=1]This World No Tobacco Day, World Health Organization Calls for Plain Packaging of Tobacco Products[/h]
Every year, six million people are killed by tobacco. 600,000 of these deaths occur among non-smokers due to the effects of second-hand smoking. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), India is home to roughly 12% of the world’s smokers, or 120 million people. Tobacco claims the lives of 900,000 Indians annually.
[h=1]India’s War Against Tobacco:

Legislation against tobacco dates back to 1975, when statutory health warnings were mandated on cigarette packs. Pictorial warnings against smoking on cigarette packets came into effect in 2009, requiring at least 40% of the cigarette package to display warnings about the health consequences of consuming tobacco. This was recently increased to 85%. Smoking in public places was banned across the country from Gandhi Jayanti, 2008.[/h][h=1]Read more at: http://thelogicalindian.com/story-f...alls-for-plain-packaging-of-tobacco-products/[/h]

Over 120 million Indians smoke, and 10% of the world’s tobacco smokers live in India. India has the second largest group of smokers in the world after China.

Almost a third of Indians—57% of all men and 11% of all women—consume some form of tobacco and many use more than one type of tobacco product.

Bidis are the most popular tobacco product used in India. Bidis account for nearly 85% of total smoked tobacco in India.
