[h=1]Foxconn replaces '60,000 factory workers with robots'[/h]

Apple and Samsung supplier Foxconn has reportedly replaced 60,000 factory workers with robots.
One factory has "reduced employee strength from 110,000 to 50,000 thanks to the introduction of robots", a government official told the South China Morning Post.
Xu Yulian, head of publicity for the Kunshan region, added: "More companies are likely to follow suit."
China is investing heavily in a robot workforce.
In a statement to the BBC, Foxconn Technology Group confirmed that it was automating "many of the manufacturing tasks associated with our operations" but denied that it meant long-term job losses.

"We are applying robotics engineering and other innovative manufacturing technologies to replace repetitive tasks previously done by employees, and through training, also enable our employees to focus on higher value-added elements in the manufacturing process, such as research and development, process control and quality control.
"We will continue to harness automation and manpower in our manufacturing operations, and we expect to maintain our significant workforce in China."
Since September 2014, 505 factories across Dongguan, in the Guangdong province, have invested 4.2bn yuan (£430m) in robots, aiming to replace thousands of workers.
Kunshan, Jiangsu province, is a manufacturing hub for the electronics industry.
Economists have issued dire warnings about how automation will affect the job market, with one report, from consultants Deloitte in partnership with Oxford University, suggesting that 35% of jobs were at risk over the next 20 years.
Former McDonald's chief executive Ed Rensi recently told the US's Fox Business programme a minimum-wage increase to $15 an hour would make companies consider robot workers.
"It's cheaper to buy a $35,000 robotic arm than it is to hire an employee who is inefficient, making $15 an hour bagging French fries," he said.

Very scary for many ordinary folks with no marketable skillsets.

It is bad for China, that Foxconn (a Taiwanese Company) opts for robots over humans, as China, like India, has a huge unskilled unemployed population base. What happens to the 50,000 people laid off? Back to their village for peasant poverty?

In the USA, making $15 minimum wage, per Ed Rensi, would enable companies to get robots to make efficient french fries. Yes. Maybe this is the American way of kicking illegal immigrants?

The only silver lining here, is there will be lots of jobs making robots. But that needs special skills. How many have these? And how many of these are needed?

I don't know what the world is coming to.

hi

i still remember those days in india....when indian railways introduced computerised reservation system....ppl worried a lot..

a hue and cry....but finally the computer needs manpower to operate...so just learn new skills which suits for the

situation....change is inevitable...changing is required....like modern vadhyaar uses more cellphones for their client...

vadhyar using modern tools for his business....everything will be okay...just flow with water....nothing to worry...

Kunjuppu ji, agree with TBS ji here. Manual pulled rickshaws are no more, and gradually laundry and dish washing are going away, even in India. I personally prefer dealing with machines than with people. In India, withdrawing cash from an ATM is much smoother than dealing with sullen bank employees.

If the quality improves on account of automation I would opt for robots ...It is only large companies with economies of scale who can afford robots,,,In India too car and motor cycle manufacturers are deploying robots in critical areas...Hyundia has 400 robots in their Chennai plant..Volkswagen India too has 123 robots in their Pune plant...

Sorry folks, I think I wasn't very clear when I posted #2 in this thread.

All I was trying to say, is that 'people who don't have the right skills or education' will be out of jobs or condemned to jobs whose wages won't fulfill their basic needs. Or long term unemployment.

There will be always demand for specialists in robotics. But the job of the High School passed factory worker will disappear. Or has been fading away over the years. Robots are cheaper now than what we imagine. We can get a 'home robot vacuum cleaner' for about $250 Canadian.

By the way, vgane, I think, robots are getting cheaper for small outfits too.

Hi Sir,
Why stop with this.
you could continue with the idea of having two more separate robots ......both to lay in bed ....one with good half and the other with better half.
