Name changers!

The name Ootacamund had been in use since 1821. Over time, it got shortened to Ooty, by which it is known world over.

In 1972, the name was abruptly changed to ‘Udhagamandalam’. The change of name had since been a source of confusion and inconvenience for tourists. Many think Ootacamund and Udhagamandalam were two different places. Besides, visitors often mistook ‘Udhyogomandal’ in Kerala for Udhagamandalam.

"Madras" was changed into "Chennai". Now, internationally, people are accustomed to the name "Chennai".

So also people will get accustomed to " Udhagamandalam " in course of time.

Those, who are still interested in " Ootty " could continue to have it.

Fine Then why not Chennai High Court ? Chennai University and Chennai Medical College? - Why stick to Madras?​

I guess this should also happen! It is a matter of time! I think some are associating value to the brand & feel any change in name will hit the brand adversely especially the 2 educational institutions/University! As far as High court is concerned less said the better!

During English regime, Madurai was called / pronounced as Majura.... Majura coats, Majura Mills etc.

Now, Madurai is pronounces as "Mathurai"; but spelling is still continued as Mad....urai
 
In some cases, old names are retained not to confuse people and to maintain popularity.

For example, whilst the name of Madras Refineries has been changed to Chennai Petroleum Corporation, the name of Madras Fertilizers remains the same.
