Before they even read the first sentence of this article, there will be Hindutva trolls who will accuse me of being anti-Modi, anti-Hindu, anti-India, and an ISIS slave. As it happens, I am none of the above. Narendra Modi usually provokes more amusement than horror in me.

One does not need a label to be shocked, horrified, and ashamed by the fact that one's countryman was lynched by a mob. 50-year-old Mohammad Akhlaq was dragged out of his house, along with his son, and beaten to death on the allegation of having stored beef in his house, and being involved in cow slaughter.

Uttar Pradesh has become infamous for communal clashes and violence, but this is extreme even by the state's standards. Even more frightening is the report that the attack was provoked by an announcement at a temple that Akhlaq's family had stored beef in their refrigerator. One wonders whether these crazed Hindutva groups even realise how alike they are to the Islamic extremists they claim to hate – in their intolerance, in their desire to take law into their own hands, in their ridiculous misinterpretations of their religion.

All the reports on the lynching say that the meat has been taken for testing by the police, and quote Akhlaq's daughter asking whether her father could be brought back to life if the meat turned out to be mutton.

As heartbreaking as her question is, the point is moot – even if the meat in question were beef, Akhlaq would have been on the wrong side of the law, but should have been alive. He would have been fined and possibly given a prison term, as cow slaughter and the buying of beef is banned in UP, but he would not have been sentenced to death. Even if it were a capital crime (which it is not), he would not have been sentenced to lynching by a mob.

Whichever animal was killed for the meat to be procured, what has happened is a terrible crime, one for which the entire country should hang its head in shame.

It is true that Narendra Modi and his BJP government cannot be held responsible for the actions of fringe groups, unless they directly provoked them. But the statements of the government, and its unequivocal pro-Hindu, anti-Muslim, anti-secular stance have certainly emboldened these crazed Hindu extremist groups, if nothing else.

There can be no greater desecration of a temple than for rabble to be roused from its pulpit, and encouraged to lynch a man. If we hold the idea of India sacred, we must ensure that the mob that went out and lynched Mohammad Akhlaq is punished. Otherwise, we are no different from an anarchic state that is ruled by religious terrorists.

The hindutva apologist will attack this post, and others will chuckle at it or just ignore it. It is a shame on all us.
This act should be condemned by all right thinking people.
Your silence is condoning such acts.

This is a village of Thakurs and they express their sentiments in a very strong way When religious sentiments of people are hurt, they get agitated and this sudden anger leads to such incidents,” former BJP MLA from Dadri, Nawab Singh Nagar told The Indian Express in the aftermath of the lynching of Mohammad Akhlaq on Tuesday.
This rationalisation of a 58-year-old man allegedly being bludgeoned to death for what he was eating is a discomforting insight into the sort of issues surrounding what is being dubbed the ‘beef murder’.
The nationwide outrage is apparently misplaced, because episodes like this are not out of the ordinary. At least that’s what the BJP western UP unit’s vice-president Shrichand Sharma seemed to think, when he told The Indian Express that ‘this happens every day’.
This was not a communal riot. The Hindu community worships cows. Whose blood won’t boil if they see cow slaughter?” asked Sharma.

What’s also clear is that some blood being spilt is apparently fine, if the other's blood boils.
According to The Times of India, a priest made the announcement that Akhlaq’s family had beef in their house. The priest later proceeded to defend himself, and told the police that he was ‘forced’ to make the announcement by two youths from Akhlaq’s village of Bisara.
The Times of India report points out that while the Akhilesh Yadav government wants the six arrested for Akhlaq’s murder to be tried under the National Security Act, the BJP’s beef appears to be with the meat in Akhlaq’s kitchen.
Thakur Harish Singh, the BJP district president is quoted as saying, “The locals gave samples of meat to the police but they (the cops) did not take it seriously. Then some people got agitated.”
The Uttar Pradesh government, The Hindu reports, has ordered a probe into the incident, even as the samples of the meat procured from the family’s kitchen have been sent for forensic analysis. The question here is: Should the quantum of punishment for the perpetrators will vary depending on the type of meat?

Vice President Hamid Ansari today said the State has to ensure the right to life for every citizen irrespective of faith or creed -- remarks that assume significance in view of the recent killing of a man by a mob near Delhi over rumours that his family ate beef.

"The State has to ensure the Right to Life, enshrined in the Article 21 of Indian Constitution, to every citizen of India, irrespective of the citizen s faith or creed," he said at a Quami Ekta Sammelan meet in the presence of dignitaries including Governor Ram Naik.

Mr Ansari said unity among the people is essential for India's progress and development. A meeting of hearts and minds of the people was essential for India to move ahead.

"Kaumi Ekta are two words. Whether its south or north, the entire India is one community and unity is necessary, which had been said by our ancestors since ages," he said. But if there was a need to organise conference on communal harmony, it meant that there was something amiss in unity, he added.

[h=1]Dadri temple priest detained; Centre seeks report from U.P.[/h]
The Union Home Ministry has sought a report from the Uttar Pradesh government on the lynching of a man at Dadri in Greater Noida over rumours that he had consumed beef.
The Centre has also sent an advisory to the State to keep a check on incidents of communal violence. Akhlaq, 50, was beaten to death and his 22-year-old son Danish was critically injured by a 200-strong mob which barged into their house at Dadri on Monday night after rumours that the family had consumed beef.
Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh police are understood to be investigating the role of ‘2-3 outsiders’ alleged to have incited the mob to lynch Akhlaq, and assault his son as ‘punishment for consuming beef’ on Monday.
A police source said the investigation hinged on ascertaining the identities of the men alleged to be behind an announcement made over the loudspeaker in the midst of a kirtan from the neighbourhood temple decrying the ‘killing of a cow’ and whether the incident was ‘a planned one’ as its execution seemed to suggest.
The temple priest, under detention, has claimed that he did not make the announcement but ‘2-3 men who barged into the temple and ‘forcibly snatched the microphone’ from him did.
The families of three men arrested for their alleged role in Akhlaq’s murder told The Hindu that the men in question ‘seemed to be outsiders.’ “We have the descriptions of the absconding men accused of leading the mob. Several teams are searching for them,” SSP (Gautam Budh Nagar) Kiran S told The Hindu.
Garima Sisodia, whose brothers Gaurav and Saurav, are among the men arrested in the case, said, “My brothers had just returned from work when the announcement was made ... no one in the village knows who the people made the announcement were.”
In the wake of one of her brothers, who is with the Indian Air Force, stating that he had decided to relocate his family from Shaista village, Akhlaq’s daughter said the family was satisfied with the steps taken by the U.P. government but was in favour of a CBI enquiry. This, even as the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) kicked up a fresh controversy through its comments on the incident.
“Several people have levelled allegations against Hindus and those working for awakening of Hindus. My view is clear, some people contract diarrhoea if they don’t abuse Hindus. I don’t object to such people. But it is fashionable for them to abuse [Hindus]. There is no substance in it,” VHP general secretary Champat Rai said.

I dont know who is hidutva apologists here - labeling is not needed.

I am not sure who will not condemn this killing. I hope the law enforcement acts so justice is done.

A man is killed for storing the meat of a killed animal;

what is the punishment for the man killers?

Again killing?

While it is a crime and the guilty must be punished, did Hamid Ansari say the same words when Pandits were driven out of Kashmir? I am sure, you will ask him and let us know.

Chandru Ji,

I agree it is a crime and punishable offence and to be condemned. Every human life is precious and there is law to take care.

But why some were silent when five leaders of Hindu Munnani were killed and six brutally attacked in Tamil Nadu?

No politics on Dadri incident: Union Minister Mahesh Sharma

Dadri, Oct 2 (PTI)
As BJP came under intensified attack over the killing of man here over rumour that he had eaten beef, Union Minister Mahesh Sharma today said parties should refrain from playing politics by giving communal colour to the incident and there should be an impartial probe by CBI or the state to punish the guilty.

Sharma, who is also the local BJP MP, visited the family of deceased Iqlakh and stuck to his stand that it was an "accident", soon after controversial AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi met them and alleged that the man was targeted for his religion as part of a "pre-planned" conspiracy.

"It is a blot on our culture and such incidents do not have a place in a civilised society. If somebody says it was pre-planned, I don't agree with it. It is an accident and investigation should happen by CBI or state and guilty should be punished. Innocents should not be victimised in the name of investigation.

"Law should take its course and there should be fair investigation. I condemn any attempt to give political or communal colour to this incident. Such people are neither well wishers of the society nor of the country," Sharma said.

The lynching of a 58-year-old man in Bisada village in Dadri, Greater Noida, owing to rumours that he had slaughtered a cow and stored beef is a horrific reminder that there are pockets in India where vicious bigotry, rather than rule of law, is the order of the day. No less shocking is the fact that far from condemning the incident, local BJP leaders said they would convene a mahapanchayat to demand the release of the six people arrested in connection with the murder. They also said if it were proved that the family had indeed stored beef, the fault was theirs.
The reaction of local BJP brass sums up the culture of impunity in India today. One where atrocities are committed in the name of protecting this or that religious taboo. That the Bisada incident was communally motivated is clear. The point is, even if the family did slaughter a cow, at worst they had flouted a law. The unusual eruption of mob violence shows that the government’s vigorous imposition and defence of bans on religious grounds is providing a fillip to dangerous vigilantism.
The Jammu and Kashmir High Court recently sought to enforce a beef ban in a state where Muslims have traditionally eaten beef. The matter will now be heard in the Supreme Court. The government needs to think hard whether such bans are feasible. Their outcome will be other Bisadas – perhaps full-blown communal riots, with the potential to tear apart the country’s social fabric. In which case we can bid goodbye to visions of enhanced FDI, peace, prosperity, acche din and India’s inevitable rise that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been promoting so eloquently.

Why have the conditional "In which case..."; the results will be more and more vicious communal riots. The hindutwa trollers should rethink when they cannot digest the possibility of the Lokayatika CArvAka having been killed by the vedic hindus or brahmins themselves, as the Mahabharata incident describes, and start asking for "proof". What better proof than this brutal killing of a man suspected of eating beef?!

Here are a few references to how meat was perceived in some of our venerated scriptures:

Rigveda (6/17/1) states that “Indra used to eat the meat of cow, calf, horse and buffalo.”

Rigveda (10/85/13) declares, “On the occasion of a girl’s marriage oxen and cows are slaughtered.” [In fact, on the night previous to the brahmin marriage, the priest, after completing the prescribed rites, is supposed to declare "gO ha, gO Ha" to notify that the slaughter of cows may start. I don't know if any vAdhyAr of today knows this even.]

Maharishi Yagyavalkya says in Shatpath Brahmin (3/1/2/21) that, “I eat beef because it is very soft and delicious.” Apastamb Grihsutram (1/3/10) says, “The cow should be slaughtered on the arrival of a guest, on the occasion of ‘Shraddha’ of ancestors and on the occasion of a marriage.”

Vashistha Dharmasutra (11/34) writes, “If a Brahmin refuses to eat the meat offered to him on the occasion of ‘Shraddha’ or worship, he goes to hell.”

Manusmriti (Chapter 5 / Verse 30) says, “It is not sinful to eat meat of eatable animals, for Brahma has created both the eaters and the eatables.”

Hinduism’s greatest propagator (The Complete Works of Swami Vivekanand, vol.3, p. 536).

Adi Shankaracharya’ commentary on Brihdaranyakopanishad 6/4/18 says : ‘Odan’ (rice) mixed with meat is called ‘Mansodan’. On being asked whose meat it should be, he answers ‘Uksha’. ‘Uksha’ is used for an ox, which is capable to produce semen.

Vashistha Dharmasutra (11/34) writes, “If a Brahmin refuses to eat the meat offered to him on the occasion of ‘Shraddha’ or worship, he goes to hell.”
Imagine if we attempt to do this to our family Vadhiyar quoting this text . What will happen ? LOL

Don't worry TKS ji.. You have not reached the level of being a hindutva troll yet. You only have a "jalraa" status :)

What is sad is the glee of the people belonging to the "jihadi-jesus" lobby in reporting such incidents. To them, this is just an opportunity for one-upmanship and nothing else...

Hmmm.. Joke series continue. The poster should provide proof for extermination of chAravakAs or lokayAtas. Simply spinning home made stories of extrapolation of a story in mahabharata does not amount to proof. Creation of an imaginary "scholar" who is supposed to have "inferred" that the killing of a charAvaka is allegorical episode of mass extermination of charAvakAs does not substantiate the bogus claim. Even the name of the scholar is not mentioned, because there is no such scholar. The claimant most probably anointed himself as a scholar.

When asked for proof of their bombastic non evidence based chest thumping assertions, they ask the other person to provide "proof" of non existence. They do not even have basic understanding of Occam's razor principle. They merely claim that there is a needle in the haystack and it is upto the other person to clear the haystack and conclude that there was no needle in the haystack after all.

Such an ignorance.

Such trollers are easily identifiable because they mostly post irrelevant things like the following :

I may be an ignoramus, but frankly, I fail to understand of what benefit is all these, when it comes to the poor and starving India and those Indians. The PM's tours are lauded by even our indian media as some kind of "aSwamEdha" victory, in which the white stallion, regally decorated, arrives back after touring the whole of the world and its 8 directions. In our sanatana dharma, this aSwamEdha horse was then simply and brutally killed by the brahmin priests as per plan and the fatty omentum in its entrails offered in the sacrificial fire. I only hope our great sanatana dharma does not work here!

and this was in response to this post :

Narendra Modi’s speeches are tailor-made for his audience. His triumphal tour of Silicon Valley was no exception as he charmed the titans of technology by speaking their lingo. There’s nothing that tech whiz kids like better than technological silver bullets for seemingly intractable social problems, attacking poverty, as the Indian prime minister said, by the power of networks and mobile phones. If an American president once promised a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage, Narendra Modi served up a digital version of that promise – JAM for all, Jan Dhan bank account, Aadhaar cards and Mobile governance.Free wi-fi at 500 railway stations. 600,000 villages linked by optical fibre network. What was not to love, or at least Facebook-like, about this vision of the future even though it does not mean women’s rights are ensured or that healthcare is truly accessible. And Modi, a master of social media, was clearly in his element laying out a no-call-drop picture of the other India –where Maharashtra farmers have WhatsApp groups and the existential choice is about iOs or Android. No wonder Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg said “I changed my profile picture to support Digital India, the Indian government’s effort to connect rural communities to the Internet and give people access to more services online.”
But FreeInternet does not translate to freedom on the Internet. While Modi tells Zuckerberg “Social media helped me gain knowledge, it broadened my horizon”, the irony is far too many ordinary Indians find out the hard way that that freedom is really a minefield. A university professor in Kolkata forwards a cartoon about Mamata Banerjee and is hauled off to jail. A student in UP posts something derogatory about Samajwadi Party’s Azam Khan and faces 14 days judicial remand. Two girls in Mumbai are arrested for questioning the city’s shutdown for Bal Thackeray’s funeral on Facebook. Actually one was arrested for ‘liking’ the post. A small-time businessman in Puducherry was arrested for tweeting about Karti Chidambaram’s wealth. And despite the many blatant abuses of Section 66A of the IT Act, the BJP chose to try and defend it in court instead of junking it and signaling a dramatic break from the UPA days.

Otherwise despite his sweet talk about JAM for all, the PM could end up sounding more like Lewis Carroll’s White Queen who offered Alice two pence a week and jam every other day.
Alice couldn't help laughing, as she said, "I don't want you to hire me – and I don't care for jam."
"It's very good jam," said the Queen.
"Well, I don't want any to-day, at any rate."
"You couldn't have it if you did want it," the Queen said. "The rule is, jam to-morrow and jam yesterday – but never jam to-day."

Height of irrelevance.

VBSji,

That is different. This is different.

Why would the "jihadi-jesus" lobby worry about the lives of hindu munnai leaders? You have to remember that the hindu munnani leaders are also brahminical. May be the lobby thinks that is just punishment to the killing of CarVaaka, which may or may not have happened according to the epic written a few thousand years ago by a guy who may or may not have been a brahmin.

Hindu or Muslim..............all incidents of killings by mob should be condemned.

Nirmala Sitaraman has clarified govt's position today in a series of 11 tweets to educate tv media and UP chiefminister akilesh, who challenged the govt to ban cow meat export.

Nirmala Sitharaman (@nsitharaman) tweeted at 4:13 PM on Fri, Oct 02, 2015:
1/n Wish to inform @ndtv & Hon. CM of UP Shri. @yadavakhilesh -the export of beef(meat of cow, oxen & calf) is prohibited as per GoI's Meat . . .

UP CM is not aware that cow slaughter is banned in UP.

CQToq-PUwAEbhv1.jpg

None of the media has reported what is in the FIR. There is no mention of beef or meat. The DSP had given a press conference, and media will not report. Perhaps it will all become clear in a few days. A police officer was shot dead in the same period while chasing cowstealers, which has gone unnoticed. There are reports that stealing of cows during id is not uncommon and is always a potentially explosive issue.

Killing is a crime and ought to be investigated and punished. Making it a hindutva issue to vent personal hatred and bile will no longer work as the politicians, police, sickular media are always exposed by the social media.

This young man was killed for saving cows. Hundred such incidents go unreported because the victim is from unmentionable religion and the perpetrators are from oppressed groups.

Do we need more than a tweet to make it credible.

2 unrelated events does not negate either event.

Talk about the event in discussion in this thread. No need to divert attention away from the topic. If that is the RSS way, then you mat do so in your friends circle.

In this site at least try to stay on the topic under discussion,
Don't just muddy up the waters.

Terming as "unfortunate" the lynching of a serving air warrior's father over rumours of eating beef, IAF chief Air Chief Marshal Arup Raha said they are looking at the possibility of moving the family to an Air Force area.

Asserting that such acts cannot be accepted, Raha said senior officers were in touch with Corporal Mohammad Sartaj and his family.

"Unfortunate incident or accident I would say. It is unfortunate that a serving Air Force personnel's family has been affected resulting in death in the family. We are already in touch (with the family)," he said on Saturday while replying to questions at his annual news conference ahead of Air Force Day.

"Whatever protection is required, we are giving it to him. We are trying to move (them) to some Air Force area. We are with him and our people are there to assist the family," he said.

IAF sources said Sartaj is currently posted in Chennai and efforts are on to either enable the rest of the family to move there or transfer him to an area where his family can be.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday announced to increase financial assistance from Rs 10 to Rs 20 lakh to be given to family of Mohammad Ikhlaq, who was lynched for allegedly eating beef in Bisada village of Dadri, Gautambudhnagar.

After reviewing the situation at a meeting held in his office, Yadav said that nobody involved in the incident will be spared. He said that the government is committed to time bound and fair probe. He assured that all steps will be taken to prevent such incidents from occurring in future.

Earlier, UP governor Ram Naik said that he is sad over Dadri lynching incident and appealed to the people of the state to maintain peace and cooperate with the government. Naik termed it a heart rending incident and said he was confident that the state would overcome the situation.
