Varanasi chosen as 'city of music' by UNESCO

Jul 16, 2015

VARANASI: In a development set to tremendously boost its age-old traditions, Varanasi has joined the global bandwagon of UNESCO "Cities of Music" under the Creative Cities Network.

"It has been chosen in the music category under UNESCO's "field of excellence" plan. The fields of excellence are classified into categories of literature, film, music, craft and folk art, design, media arts and gastronomy," Varanasi mayor Ramgopal Mohley told TOI on Wednesday.

"We had done preparatory work for six months before sending a proposal in April in this connection to the UNESCO. The approval of the proposal in music category clearly signifies the rich musical heritage of this ancient temple town," he added.

"The inclusion in the network has also paved way for representing the cultural heritage of the holy city on the world stage through the UNESCO project. It will not only provide a fillip to tourism, but will also give a chance to local artists and musicians to visit countries that are a part of this network," added Mohley.

Mohley said that selection of the city in music category will also help in revive city's culture of music and play a key role in its conservation.

Nine cities — Glasgow in the UK, Hanover and Mannheim in Germany, Ghent in Belgium, Hamamatsu in Japan, Brazzaville in the Republic of Congo, Bogota in Columbia, Seville in Spain and Bologna in Italy — are a part of UNESCO "Cities of Music".

Music was introduced in 2006 as the fifth cultural category in the Creative Cities Network of the world body. Bologna and Seville were the inaugural Cities of Music. The successful candidate cities will exhibit experience in holding music festivals and concerts at an international level as well as local level and possess appropriate venues, concert halls and auditoriums to continue to do so in future.

They should also be known as recognized hubs for music creation through availability of specialized music schools, amateur choirs, bands and orchestras, and studio facilities.
