At Poruvazhy Peruviruthy Malanada Temple in Kerala's Kollam district, Duryodhana is worshipped as the main deity. It is the only temple in South India where a Kaurava is considered a God.

Poruvazhy Peruviruthy Malanada, popularly known as Peruviruthy Malanada or Malanada is located at Edakkad Ward(Kara) of Poruvazhy Village in Kunnathoor Taluk of Kollam District (Kerala State). This place is the northern border of Kollam district which Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha districts share the boundaries. The temple is located equidistant from Adoor(M C Road) on the Northeast and Sasthamcottah on the Southeast.

It is believed that the ˜Sankalpa Moorthy ˜at Malanada is ˜Duryodhananâ, the Great Epic of Mahabharatham.

The concept is unique in Indian history in as much as ˜Duryodhananâ, the Kaurava King known for his ˜Thamogunaâ driven thoughts and actions, being adored as the principal deity in a temple.

Enduring beliefs assimilate into personal value system. The myth unravels: as part of his efforts to trace out the˜Pandavasâ in exile, Duryodhanan traversed the forests in the south and reached Malanada hill. By that time he was much tired and went to a nearby house on the north west of Malanada and asked for drinking water. It was Kaduthamsserry Kottaram, where Malanada Appoppan, the priest and ruler of the land was staying. An elderly woman gave him toddy which was customary at that time as a mark of respect. The king enjoyed the drink, but realized after seeing the ˜Kurathaliâ worn by the woman that she belonged to an untouchable lower cast by name ˜Kuravaâ. The king consoled himself and appreciated the divinity of the place and its people who possessed supernatural powers (Siddha). Thereafter, in furtherance of his ˜Rajadharmaâ, the king sat on the hill and worshipped Lord Siva, praying for the welfare of his people (the prajas). As an act of charity he gave away 100s of acres of agricultural land and paddy fields as freehold to the ˜Devasthanamâ. Even now the land tax of the above property is being levied in the name of ˜Duryodhananâ.

The king also ensured that Gandhari, the Royal Mother, Dussala, his sister, Karnan, his close associate and ˜Angarajanâ, Dronar, his ˜Guruâ and the other members of his family were properly and adequately aboded and worshipped in the nearby places and members of the ˜Kuravaâ caste are poojaris in all such places. Please see this Video

The Epic Mahabharatha is known to all.. The rival king Duryodhana, the eldest of the Kaurava clan is supposed to be still alive at least on paper in a remote village in Kerala.. The land tax receipt for Malanada Devaswam still is addressed to the Kaurava king Duryodhana. Unbelievable!! Isn't it ?? The one and only Duryodhana temple in south India, popularly known as Peruviruthy or Malanada is located at Edakkad Ward (Kara) of Poruvazhy Village in Kunnathoor Taluk of Kollam District.

It is also reachable from Kayamkulam and Karunagappally on the N H 47 and Kottarakkara (via Puthoor or Enathu) on the M C road (approximately 25 KMs. From each centre)

In the Kumaon region of Uttranchal, several beautifully carved temples are dedicated to Duryodhana and he is worshipped as the deity. The mountain tribes of Kumaonfought along with Duryodhana armies in the Mahabharata war; he was venerated as a capable and generous administrator.

The temple of 'Duryodhan' at Osla Village. It is on the on the way to Har-ki-Dun Valley at the North-West corner of Uttarakhand.

It is said that after the holy war of 'Kurukshetra', where Duryodhan and man of his associates were killed, his followers took refuge in this area, the hills of Uttarakhand, which people (at that age) dared. They established temples of Duryodhan and Karna, one of his heroic associates, and spread the culture of worship of these dietified characters. Till date, people in 22 villages in the region worship Duryodhan and Karna. This temple is also known as Someshwar Temple.

Not at all surprising in a country where we have temples for film actors and actresses and sportsmen!
But the post gives rise to the possibility of the epic being a real true story and not imaginary fiction.
