Even after nearly six hours of efforts by firefighters, the bodies of only Dharshan (2) and Gowri (55) could be recovered. The fate of 10-month-old Subhiksha, her parents Ranjith (35) and Kokila (30), and grandfather Krishnamoorthy (60) was uncertain.
“The water current is very strong and it made rescue operation difficult. As of now, we have recovered only two bodies,” said Janakiraman. The fire and rescue personnel called off the operation around 8.30 pm.
Witnesses painted a tragic picture of how the jolly ride by nine members of the extended family, all from Chennai, turned tragic as they dangerously tried to change their positions on the coracle. “The coracle started tilting when they tried to shift places. The accident took place in a flash,” said Mani, one of the witnesses. On witnessing the mishap, two persons in another coracle jumped into the water and saved three — Rajesh (30), Gomathi (25) and their child Sachin (4). While Rajesh and his family were residents of Ellai Amman Koil Street in West Mambalam, Ranjith’s family was from Tambaram. Murugesan, the boatman, survived. Rajesh and Ranjith’s families were distant relatives and visited Hogenakkal to celebrate the wedding anniversary of one of the couples.
The apparent reason for the accident is overloading since ten people were travelling in the coracle, while the permitted limit is only six, including the boatman. Though the Tourism Department provides life jackets to tourists, none of the victims were wearing one. “The life jackets provided by them are very dirty. So none of the tourists use them,” said a coracle rider.
“We’ve temporarily banned coracle ride at Hogenakkal until further orders,” said Collector K Vivekanandan.
