[h=1]No food for thought here: Parliament canteen subsidy to stay[/h]The subsidy in the Parliament canteen, whose cut-price menu includes a mutton curry at just Rs 20, is not going away despite calls from some lawmakers for stopping it.

At least, that’s what the House food management committee’s chairperson Janarthan Reddy believes.

“Why should I victimise the staff and security personnel working in Parliament? Kisike pet pe laath nehi marni chahiye (We shouldn’t snatch To defend his stand, Reddy dished out an “food away from the mouths of others),” Reddy told Hindustan Times.

internal survey” conducted by the committee which shows that a majority of people eating at the canteen are parliamentary staff and security personnel.

“The major share (when parliament is in recess) – 42% - is consumed by parliamentary staff and security guys. If we hike the prices, these people will not be able to afford the Parliament canteen’s food,” said the Telangana Rashtra Samithi MP.

The survey showed parliamentarians and media personnel consume the same amount of food – 9% - at the canteen when Parliament is in session. When the House is not in session, the MPs’ share is 3% while that of the media is 2%

I am not a big fan our legislators, but this argument defies logic.
It reads like it is a big deal, but is it?
What is the total amount for the year? Will it be Rs 1 Crore? That is chump change, that is probably less than a days corruption / MP. It is not even worth considering.

If everybody gives up their LPG subsidy it will save the government.
“As many as 2.8 lakh people have responded positively…and this will lead to a saving of at least Rs 100 crore. This Rs 100 crore can be utilised for the welfare of poor,” Modi had said. - See more at: http://indianexpress.com/article/india/india-others/government-targets-1-crore-consumers-to-give-up-lpg-subsidy/#sthash.3ycuoUuy.dpuf

This is a quarrel that does not follow any party line but it is no less intense as members of the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha slug it out — verbally — over whether they should surrender canteen subsidy in the Parliament House Complex.

And, the decision of the Committee on Food Management in Parliament House Complex to retain the subsidy has clearly not settled the issue as several MPs continue to discuss the campaign launched by some of their colleagues to give up the subsidised food and other provisions.

Agitated by the campaign launched by Biju Janata Dal member Baijayant “Jay” Panda to “End Parliament Canteen Subsidy,’’ several members on Wednesday started a counter-campaign, asking him and others who supported his idea, to first give up “all indirect and illegal subsidies like loan waivers and tax concessions.’’

Mr. Panda came in for some personal targeting. Referring to his letter to MPs asking them to give up subsidy for Parliament canteen and set an example for the entire nation, the signatories said they would endorse his move if he would set a “personal’’ example by giving up loan waivers reportedly secured by companies run by his family.

Such loan waivers and Non-Performing Assets, according to the letter, make for a “bigger ethical issue’’ than the “paltry amount’’ on food subsidy. “We hope you will give up all big benefits and concessions received and will oppose all concessions to corporate and other affluent sections in future,’’ the counter-campaign suggested.

Why not our M.Ps set personal example by giving up Parliament subsidy which is considered as a ‘biggest ethical issue’ .

The subsidy on food may be a paltry amount, but let them not forget that it is the drops that makes the ocean.

For a country like ours, every paise saved is a paise earned.

Will they thi8nk of doing it??

The quantum of money saved is immaterial. Above all, setting personal example is important.
All are "preach only politicians" ?
To set the ball on roll, let us wish, Modi and his men will have the wisdom of setting example.
