In the favored Vedic calendar which is also called Panchang (am), the eleventh (11th) day in the fortnight of the lunar cycle is commonly referred to as the day of Ekdashi. This happens surprisingly twenty-four (24) times every year and as a matter of fact, each Ekadashi has a unique name for itself. One of these Ekadashis, is widely celebrated by the name of ‘Vaikunta Ekadashi', and is also known as 'Mokshada ekadashi'. According to the widely acclaimed Vishnu Purana, fasting on this Vaikuntha Ekadashi is equivalent to fasting on the remaining 23 Ekadashis of the (Hindu) year. However, according to the Vaishnava tradition, fasting is compulsory on all the Ekadashis of both Shukla paksha and Krishna paksha. In fact, fasting on Ekadashi is actually considered holier than on many of the other religious observations.

'Vaikuntam' in the Tamil language means the abode of Lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu is represented as the Preserver of the universe and is one of the Trinity of the famous Hindu pantheon. He assumes a discrete presence for all the devotees during the precise occurrences of the Ekadashi days. It is strongly believed that unswerving devotion and rigorous fasting even during just a single Ekadashi occurrence, manages to bring the blessings of Vishnu and also helps in deriving liberation from the endless cycle of birth and death. One can gain freedom from all the sins of the past through just following Ekadashi fasting. People nowadays, as a consequence, relate Ekadashi with fasting primarily, and most are not even aware of why and how to do the same.

The Vaishnav (Worshipping of Lord Vishnu) culture or Vaishnavism firmly believes that ‘Vaikuntha Dwaram’ which is the term for ‘the gate to the Lord's Inner Sanctum’ is opened on this very day, which makes it so auspicious. Special prayers, discourses, yagnas, and speeches are nicely arranged at all Vishnu temples across the entire world on this propitious day. The study of the Vedic astronomy reveals the importance of the moon's influence over the human mind. Ekadashi is said to be encouraging for the mind inspiring it to be in its natural state of love and wisdom. Finding the real home or real place of residence, the mind is hence helped to merge with the True Self. At this stage, the person then obviously reaches the enlightened states of being.
Vaikunta Ekadashi falls approximately in the month of Marga-seersha (according to the English calendar- around the months of December end or January). This is observed with pure solemnity in almost all the temples of Lord Vishnu. Fasting is strictly prescribed on all Ekadashis, and it is not a big deal for many to fast twice a month. In the Kali Yuga, even if it is just one Ekadashi which is observed with pure faith and devotion, and if the mind is wholly fixed on God Hari, then one is freed from the rounds of birth and death. The holy scriptures give us their reassurance on this point.

Devotees who fast on this day observe stern vigil the whole nighttime and they also do Hari Kirtan, Japa and meditation. Some do not drink even a drop of water, and food morsels are well out of consideration. Those who don’t be able to fast entirely take some light fruits and milk or juices throughout the day. No rice or items having rice in the ingredients should be taken on the Ekadashi days. This cannot be exempted in any case for any individual. Keeping the physical life relatively free, through such methods like abstinence from food and certain activities benefit the spiritual aspirant to reach the ultimate goal of coming into alignment with the Higher Self. Through carving out an atmosphere of sanctity, the time and energy is redirected toward devotional activities and selfless service.
