From the times when our nanis and dadis were kids till today, honey is considered as the best sweetener - high in both nutrition and taste. It is a better substitute to the processed white sugar because it contains nutrients like Vitamin C, Iron and Calcium depending on the source.Besides great taste and texture, the ease with which one can consume it makes honey 'nature's miracle'. For example, you can add honey in your milk, porridge, tea, juices, or you can directly apply honey on bread instead of jam. Honey comes with added health benefits like:

Energy source: Honey is an instant source of energy. You can take a teaspoon of it when feeling weak or just prior to your workout session to give you the stamina. So the next time when you are low and lethargic in the morning have a honey toast to boost your energy.

Boosts Immunity:
Honey naturally contains polyphenols and phytonutrients which protect the cell from free radical damaging thereby acting as an antioxidant, antibacterial and antiviral agent. It also protects from cancers and heart issues.

Digestion:
Honey can improve the gut microflora improving digestion, preventing stomach disorders.

Cough:
Honey in combination with ginger juice can help reduce throat irritation and help treat cough as well.

Wound Healing:
Since it has antibacterial properties, external application of honey on wounds, burns or cuts inhibits the growth of bacteria and absorbs moisture from the air. This aids healing.

Hangovers:
Honey helps to overcome severe hangovers. Honey is gentle on the stomach and contains a mix of natural sugars like fructose. These sugars are known to speed up the oxidation of alcohol by the liver, acting as a 'sobering' agent.

Helps sleep better:
A cup of warm milk or green tea with honey can do the magic.

Skin:
Honey combined with milk, curds etc externally can help nourish, moisturize and soothe the skin.

Improves Athletic Performance:
Unlike sugar which contains only glucose, honey has an equal ratio of glucose and fructose which helps athletes perform better and recover faster. This is because glucose gives instant energy and fructose goes into the liver and is slowly released. This prevents muscle breakdown and improving wear and tear.

Although honey is healthy and sweet, it has calories. So avoid overindulgence to prevent weight gain. 1-2 teaspoon per day is all that you need.

Honey has been part of both diet and medicine for centuries. Although honey is a natural product, it's not as healthy as many people make it out to be. Before you make honey part of your regular diet, take into consideration its good and bad sides. If you have a medical condition, talk to your doctor before making changes to your diet.
