Hi, Where is Suresh? Apologies to the members, especially, Hari, Kashyap, MRIFAN, I was a bit tied up so could not actively take part. I will find sometime to keep writing, especially my pet thread on untouchability.

My only fear is, I will never be able to find who the actress is in Kumudam's Oru Nadikayin kathai, and the characters in it :-(

I went through this thread and was surprised at some of the arguments raised against certain artists, who are the gems of Tamilnadu.If we make out a list of the great artists of 20th century in India,his name will defenitely be there in the second place.K.Bagyaraj is the greatest screenplay writer in Tamilcinema,if not in Indian cinema.

And yet the main 'accusations' levied against them were that 'they married twice,thrice' were 'immoral' and propogated 'sexuality in their movies'

coming to the important issue of portrayal of brahmins in movies,I believe that the main problem is that brahmins are easily identifiable by their appearance and accent.Further the same accusations are levied by muslims against movies, that they are always shown as terrorists and as hindu men marrying their women in movies.Manirathnam showed a burkah clad woman running in way in 'bombay' and in that movie she ended up marrying a hindu and produced hindu offsprings.For this 'offense' even some bombs were thrown in manirathnam's house.In another famous hindi movie produced by zee films, a sikh boy will fall in love with a pakistani muslim girl and marry her.It will be shown that pakistani muslim community opposes this very strongly and barbarically.

One has to think about how devars are shown in movies.They will be shown as people with big moustaches,with sickles in their hands,as being casteist and hooligans.Even the hero will be shown as a violent but good natured devar.Somehow I have never seen devars protesting against this portrayal.

Historically women of some races were hailed as beautiful by the community. Blondes in the west and north indian and brahmin women in south. Many dalits even name the fairest girl child in their name as "papathi'. So it is no wonder that north indian heroines succeed in tamil movies and brahmin women are shown as heroines in tamil movies.I dont see anything wrong here.

the story was supposedly told by Ramba and written by someone else. She has mentioned about action king??? arjun (who had fun with both the actress and her mom, also mentioned are the dirty things happened during her first movie chengkottai), karthik (happenings during the movie - ullathai allithaa)...., sathiyaraj (the person who intentionally gave chances to old actresses, k.r. vijaya (who gave the actress a party after ullathai allitha's success).

sir - in case of of devars only men are potrayed in a slightly offensive manner. but in case of bramins even women are potrayed offensively. moreover, if potrayal of devars in tamil cinema is offensive, surely devars would have protested or petitioned the censor board. the fact that they have not done so clearly shows there is nothing offensive in potrayal of devars in tamil films. whereas bramins have petitioned & protested many times against offensive potrayal of bramins in tamil movies.

sir - yes! the film makers mentioned in this thread are really 'gems'! 'gems' is a chocolate packet worth one rupee. these film makers are also worth not more than one rupee!!!!

sirs - it is very irritating to see on sun t.v. many bramin women anchors speak in tamil which is far worse than the tamil of illiterate non bramins. ramya krishna, who was doing a flop programme called 'thanga vettai' regularly used the word 'povudhu' instead of the decent 'pogirathu'. now jayashree former(?) actress who is running an absurd show called 'thiruvaalar thirumathi' is also using the same word. on vijay tv, flop actress anu haasa, sister of the discredited suhasini uses words like 'pidichichu' instead of 'pidikkirathu' which is more decent and pleasing. SPB Charan also said 'vandhicu' instead of 'vandhudhu'. these may look like ordinary things. but i feel very difficult to digest this sort of 'tamil', particularly when it comes from persons who are said to be 'bramins'.
