    Thumbs up Kala sarpha dosham

    Dear swaminathanji,
I have come across many people who have this dosham in Malaysia. But the astrologers here take this for thier advantage. They build the fear of this dosham in their customers and make huge some of money in promising to neutalize the dosham. Please swamiji give us all details of this dosham and how it can be neutralized by oneself. I'm sure your reply will be a great help for all those effected by this dosham. Thank you swamiji. May the great lord bless you for your effort and care for all of us here. Happy New Year swamiji.

    Regards
    Malar

    Kala Sarpa Dosham

I too came across similar findings by Josiers here in India. They suggest remedies by way of visit to Rahu and Ketu temples to neutralise these doshas. There is one astrologer near my house here and we were not aware that he was suggesting the same remedy to many of his customers. Eventually it was found that he was indeed hand in glove with a travel agent who arranged buses from Bangalore to Kalahasti (for eliminating Sarpa Dosha) and once the required number of customers were mobilised with the 'suspected kala sarpa dosha' he conducted the guided tour and made some more money in collusion with the Travel agent. Soon people found out he is really not interested in astrology but was looking for filling up buses for tour to Kalahasti, by telling everyone who visited him that they had kala sarpa dosha.

btw, pse tell me why rahu and ketu dont affect Christians and Muslims and why only Hindus, that too brahmins mostly?

Please do not get panic from these. Basically as per very prominent astrologers never makes you scare. These are not grahas only reflectors. Some of good astrogers of Bangalore, whom I know personally never consider Rahu & ketu effects. Please read the following blog as I don't have any documental support with me now.

AFRAID OF KAALSARPA DOSHA?- Let us tell you some facts

Yes it is true that, taking a pigrimage to any temple will give you benifit but it is not that, some one should take other for task.

I am pasting here a message that I received as a forward. Though it has nothing to do with Kalasarpadosham, it is very relevant to the kind of superstitious beliefs that we all have about astrological principles. I hope it helps people view things in a proper perspective.

    Dear parent,
    Are you a vaishnavite/Aiyengar?
Are you looking for a match for your son/daughter?
Do you find Astrologers speaking in a language which is plain Latin to you?

If your answer to these questions is yes, then please read this fully. Otherwise just delete this and carry on with your chores. Thank you.

    1. Know thyself

A vaishnavite is one who has accepted the Vedas as the ultimate pramaanam (unassailable truth) and Srimannarayanan as the God to be worshipped. For him all other gods in the Hindu pantheon are just devathas, who can not give him what he wants i.e. either Saayujyam/moksham after this world or lasting aayush, aarogyam, Aiswaryam etc., in this world. This is called ‘ananyagathithvam’ by learned men of the srivaishnava sampradhaayam. A ‘prapannan’ or one who has done prapatti/saranaagati has unwavering faith in these tenets. This is the reason why srivaishnavites do not offer navagrahatarpanam (aadityam tarpayami, somam tarpayami….sanaicharam tarpayami etc.,) while offering kesavaathi tarpanam during the sandhyaavandanam thrice every day. For a vaishnavite the planets are just devathas and they do what the God has ordained. Also a vaishnavite believes that his birth, fortunes, pleasures, pains, sufferings, destiny and death are determined only by his own praaraptha and sanjitha karmas which are nullified by Srimannarayana once he performed the prapatti/saranagati in his lifetime.
The very fact that you are a vaishnavite means you have accepted these Vedic truths. You might have learnt these facts from books or through listening to elders’ advices and religious discourses or you might have simply inherited this sampradhaayam from your forefathers who at some point in the endless chain of generations would have consciously accepted this sampradhayam as the only true path to salvation. Either way it does not matter because you are a member of the vaishnavite community which follows the best system of religious philosophy known to mankind. This is not a boastful, hollow claim because this write-up has been prepared by one who has studied comparative religious philosophy (of major religions of the world) as the subject for his Doctoral research.
So in a gist, there are two important points. 1) a vaishnavite worships only Srimannarayana and does not believe that other smaller devathas can do anything good or bad to him. 2) a vaishnavite also believes that his birth, death and life are determined only by his own karmas which can be nullified by saranagati to Srimannarayana.

    2. What are you doing?

    a) If the girl’s star is Rohini it will affect the health of the uncles of the girl as well as the boy marrying her.
    b) If the girl’s star is Ayilyam, it is not good for the mother-in-law.
    c) If the girl’s star is Kettai, it is not good for the elder brother of the boy marrying her.
    d) If the girl’s or boy’s star is Moolam, it is not good for the father-in-law.
    e) If the girl’s star is Pooradam, it is not good for the mother-in-law.

You would have heard the above five judgments/assertions from the old ladies in the family repeatedly. Every time you get a horoscope of a girl/boy whose other qualifications/eligibilities are outstanding you would have been intimidated by these superstitious assertions and would have meekly accepted it as the easy way out of a dilemma. Now being a vaishnavite how far are you right in doing that? Let us see.

First if you subject these assertions to the test of proof you would find that there is no truth in these statements. The following books/treatises are considered to be the basic and authoritative texts for the Jyotisha Shastra:
    1. Brihat Samhita by Varahamihira
    2. Brihat Jatakam by Varahamihira
    3. Horasara by Prithyusas
    4. Jataka Parijatham by Vaidhyanatha Dikshita
    5. Jataka tatvam by Mahadeva
    6. Uttarakaalamrutham by Kalidasa
    7. Jatakadesamargam by Pothumanai Somadri
    8. Jataka Alankaram by Ganesa Devajna
    9. Sangetha Nidhi by Ramadayalu
    10. Kalaprakasika, Sarvartha Chintamani, Paladipika etc., by later day Astrologers.

We engaged learned researchers to study these granthas in their oldest editions and the results of their study of these texts in their authentic form has led to the conclusion that the above statements about the stars are plain superstitions and are not supported by these granthas on Jyotisha Shastra.
In practice too we have records of many families where the daughter-in-laws with these stars did not bring any misfortune to the husband’s family.
Having settled that issue let us see this from another more important angle:
If you are a vaishnavite and have accepted the fact that Srimannarayana is the ultimate truth and that other devathas cannot determine anything about you, then where is the question of their determining the life and death of you, your wife or your son? For that matter how can you believe that these devathas represented by the stars(actually the stars are not even devathas) will decide your health and fortunes? If you believe that your daughter-in-law’s/son-in-law’s star can determine your fortunes and health what happens to your higher belief (mahavishvaasam) on Srimannarayana? Don’t you think that your saranagati to Srimannarayana is hollow and meaningless if you believe in the powers of these devathas?

Now again in a gist there are three points which have emerged: 1)The assertions about the stars is neither authentic nor supported by any of the ancient literature in Jyotisha Shastra.2)these assertions are neither supported by the experience in daily life as can be seen from the large number of happily married girls/boys born in these stars.3)If you still believe in these assertions it would mean that you consciously choose to be superstitious and that brings you in direct conflict with the Srivaishnava sampradhaayam to which you claim to belong.

    3. Please think about this and then act.

So parents, when next time you go to an astrologer, make it clear to him that you are a vaishnavite and so you do not believe in the bad effects of stars and ask him only to look at the compatibility in other aspects alone. Better still - go to the temple and pray before Srimannarayanan and ask for his approval of a match.

This message is sent to you after collecting email i.d.s of vaishnavites from various matrimony sites. It is sent in the interest of Sri Vaishnavite community and no offence is meant or intended to individual beliefs. The idea is only to stimulate right thinking and to promote the welfare of the community.

    Dear Sri Raju, Greetings!

I agree with the major premise that Jyothisham is nothing but superstition, bunk, and a complete waste of time and energy. However, some of the points made in the article you have pasted do not jive with Sri Vaishnava tenets.

    • Jyotisham is one of the six angas of the four Vedas. Therefore, Sri Vaishnavas do not consider Jyothisham to be inauthentic, and superstitious.
    • Sriman Narayana only gets rid of the Sanchitha and the part of the prarabdha karma that has still not started giving its effect. The part of the prarabdha karma that has started to give effect to the jiva in this life must be endured, until death, at which point moksham occurs.
    • Sri Vaishnavas do not reject that other devathas have the ability to give boons -- only that these powers are granted by Sriman Narayana to these "shudra" devathas.
    • These desires can be fulfilled directly by appealing to Sriman Narayana instead.
    • The belief among Sri Vasihnavas is that all these boons that other devthas can bestow can also be had directly from Iswara, i.e. Sriman Narayana himself, and in addition you can also get Mosksham as well, that none other than Sriman Narayana can grant. This is why Swami Nammazhvar says, "உன்னையல்லால் ஏதும் குறைவேண்டேன்".
    • The Rohini stuff is about a boy baby, not a girl baby.
    • This article accuses Jyothisham as superstitious, and yet suggests another set of superstitious assertions, such as Sriman Naryana and Saranagathi, as alternatives.
    • Saranagathi is about getting mosksham at the end of this life, not about whether or not planets have any effect.
    • Sri Vasinavam does NOT reject the truth of Jyothisham. It does NOT say planets have no effect.
    • All they say is that you seek any remedy you want directly from Sriman Narayana, not from any pooja directed at any of these shudra devatahas.

Folks, can't you see from these assertions and counter claims, all of these are a bunch of hooey? This system, that even the most orthodox of Sri Vaishnavas happily believe, puts earth at the center, sun and moon as planets, two planets that don't even exist, and to top it all claims the position of these real/imaginary objects at the precise instant of one's birth has a life long effect. The answer to the Yaksha's question to Yudhishtra as to what is the most amazing thing, for which Y answered that seeing so much death around, people still act as though they are going to live for ever, must be that otherwise reasonable people still believe in such utterly incredulous stuff.

Look to science folks and turn your back on mambo jumbo. For all its faults, it is the only system that is self correcting and gives you real benefits that can be enjoyed in this life, the only life anyone can be sure of.

    Cheers!

    Dear Mr. Na. Raghavan/Narayan,

    1. What I have posted is not exactly my views. They are views of someone else received as a forwarded message by me.
    2. I believe Jyothisham was originally used fix auspicious time for taking up major tasks such as performance of Yajna etc. and in course of time it became common man's burden for every thing he does during a day. Other than this I dont think jyothisha sastra had any other significance.
    3. If I remember right, it is kshutra devathas and not shudra devathas as u have mentioned. Lest some revolutionary TB may pick on your words and post a rejoinder saying the hindu religion had shudras among even gods. I think kshutra means lesser. If i am wrong please let me know.
    4. Your observations about the prarabtha karma is right. But in the case of an 'aartha prapanna' I think it is a different take. But there is also a view that at the time of doing prapatti if one prays for proper 'uttara krityam' during the rest of the lifetime even that will be granted by Srimannarayana and hence the 'krithakrithyan' (செய்த வேள்வியன்) has no reason to fear or seriously worry about the prarabtha karma dogging him.
    5. Other than the above points, i think the message had some very interesting questions. I agree with the point that once you have accepted Srimannarayana as the summum bonum of existence, there is no need to worry about the kshutra devathas including the Nakshatras and navagrahas. Otherwise there is no difference between the Rakshasas who tied Hanuman with ropes after tying him up with the powerful astra and Vaishnavas who goes after navagrahas and nakshatras after prapatti. In the earlier case, because of their distrust the astra as well as ropes became useless. In the later case also the prapatti becomes a hollow exercise.

I agree with the point that the kshutra devathas have derived power to grant boons. But it is also believed by SriVaishnavas that these boons are transient and will be withdrawn as quickly as they were given. Nammazhvar's words are to emphasise the fact that God is the siddhopayam as well as the Sadhyopayam.

Rohini - may be true. I really do not know.

Srimannarayana and saranagati are not suggested as alternatives. What is suggested is only that saranagati should be done with mahaviswasam and that it should not be a hollow exercise, like people looking for some kind of vibration in a temple.

Saranagati is about getting moksham--yes indeed. But once u have established a rapport with the king why do you go a janitor for favours? I think this is exactly what u have yourself said in the last two lines of your post.

    Cheers.

    Respectable members,

The gist of the forwarded e-mail was shown as

"Now again in a gist there are three points which have emerged: 1)The assertions about the stars is neither authentic nor supported by any of the ancient literature in Jyotisha Shastra.2)these assertions are neither supported by the experience in daily life as can be seen from the large number of happily married girls/boys born in these stars.3)If you still believe in these assertions it would mean that you consciously choose to be superstitious and that brings you in direct conflict with the Srivaishnava sampradhaayam to which you claim to belong."

Point number 3 is very interesting. Believing in supersitions is claimed to be in direct conflict with the Srivishnava Sampradhaayam.

That raises one question in my mind. Is dicriminating against non-brahmin Srivaishnavas in direct conflict with Srivaishnava Sampradhaayam too? If it is so, (I don't know for sure, it is though) why such practices are still tolerated even in Srivaishnava temples? Thank you.

    Cheers!
