Samashti Poonal

We live in Canada and we would like to perform our son's poonal sometime next year. All our close relatives in India are getting old. They are not in a position to organize this event for us. And none of our cousins or other relatives want to commit to helping us. In this scenario, we decided to the only way for us to conduct the poonal would be to participate in a Samashti poonal. But my parents and elders do not like the idea. I am just curious as to why there is an opposition to this. The only reason we can get out of them is that it might not be a good day for my son's nakshatram. We are in a bind. We still want to proceed with the samashti (we have no choice), but it is worrying us and we want to get some opinions about the samashti poonal.

Any tips and explanations will be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.
