Respected members,

We generally/some times strictly follow a tradition of avoiding the return on the 9th day to the original starting place. What is the significance behind this & is it really inauspicious & to be followed so strictly?

Is this prescribed in sastra or a tradition?

I am sure learned members can throw some light on this.

regards,
Moorthi

It is not inauspicious. If you return on the 9th day then once again you have to take another journey. Now a days taki9ng another journey is not a big probleml. On those days journey means you have to go by walk.there was no bus or train on those days.now a days you can return on the ninth day.

Dear Moorthi,

In my understanding many of the rituals are purely scientific, we start only on certain days, mostly that will be infuenced by thithi, that is the relative position of the moon and the sun to the earth, and next is varam, which is the week day, the ninth day from any of the combination of the thithi and varam mostly should be inauspicious, this will require mathematical proof, and that could be the reason, for them asking us to follow that.

Incidentally, these are to be followed strictly generally, but there can be exceptions, but one should not always go by the exceptions, to make people understand and remember the same, they give some small punishments like sitting on the Grinder etc.,

I only heard that if somebody is constrained to return back on the 9th day, owing
to family necessities, the person who travelled to other place is asked to stay outside
overnight and can return home next morning. Similarly, if there is some inauspicous
time at the time of departure, owing to non-availability of reservation the next day, etc,
the person who is required to travel, is asked to keep the things in the neighbour's house
or stay outside for a few hours before leaving.
