Vaikunta Ekadasi is one the important and auspicious days to the Hindus. It is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It occurs in the Hindu calander, in the month of Margazhi/Dhanur Maasam (Between December and January). Also called the 'Mukkoti Ekadasi', when observed, it gives liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

The significance of Vaikunta Ekadasi is mentioned in the 'Padma P...urana' as also in ‘Vishnu Purana’. Legend says that Lord Vishnu killed a demon by using the feminine energy from within himself. When the Demon was killed, the Lord was pleased and named the female energy “Ekadasi”.

It is believed that normally the doors to “Vaikunta” (Lord Vishnu’s abode) are kept closed throughout the year and they open only on Vaikunta Ekadasi Day. People who observe “Fasting” on this auspicious day and propitiate Lord Vishnu and Goddess will be relieved of all the sins committed by them knowingly or unknowingly. They will get a place in Vaikunta after their death and remain there forever (as there is no rebirth for them). For fasting, it is advised that devotees should abstain from consuming rice from the previous night itself and through out the Ekadasi day.

Devotees may pray to Lord Vishnu by (1) Chanting Vishnu Sahasranamam, (2) Reciting Narayana Sooktam (3) Worshipping at temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu, (4) Performing poojas with Tulsi Leaves which are preferably from plants at home or from market.
