[Question] Question on sastram for mottai

Hello,

I think the question of mottai and whose lap the boy sits on varies according our sects and subsects. Kindly consult your acharyan if you are still in touch with your acharyan family or consult the dikshithar who conducts all your rituals for you.

Hi,

We are 2 sisters, and was wondering the rituals for motai for my son. If I don’t have an own brother, do you make the baby sit on dad’s lap or shall I ask my dad’s brother’s son(cousin) instead. My husband side says it’s the dad but I have never seen that unless there are no cousins involved.
Please help me understand!
If you dont have a brother, then your husband can take the child on his lap for tonsure. There are no hard and fast rule for this,
